The Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, founded in 1889 to save Jamestown Island, is the nation's oldest statewide preservation organization. As it grew, the APVA began to acquire and preserve properties of all kinds across the state, and today cares for the the John Marshall House, Bacon's Castle, Scotchtown and Cape Henry Lighthouse, among other properties.
In recent years, the APVA has expanded its mission to organization members to include technical and advocacy assistance and expertise.
As part of its preservation efforts, the APVA sponsors an internet-based preservation forum through the generous cooperation of the Connect Richmond program of the University of Richmond's Jepson School of Leadership Studies.

Information about the APVA Preservation Virginia Forum:
A. The list is for preservation issues only, but preservation in the widest sense. The issues should be mostly local but postings that affect the national or worldwide preservation field are certainly welcomed. We aim for the Preservation Virginia Forum to be a robust marketplace for preservation advocates to share news and information about buildings, streetscapes, natural landscapes and other features of the built or natural environment.
B. The list is for news, sharing information and spirited debate. Members should use the forum to post news articles, press releases, public documents, opinions and news about preservation in the Virginia, national and international arena. The list is not for advertisements, and posting of any spam or junk will be grounds for removal from the list.
C. The list is for the open exchange of ideas, the idea being that with proper information, forum participants from the greater Richmond area can make good decisions about the quality of life here and how preservation can improve our day-to-day life. Ergo, APVA Preservation Virginia does not endorse opinions on the forum.
D. Members of the list may not post anonymously. This is an open forum, and sending out a posting is a public act, and must be attributable to a person. Should information be private, members may of course send information to members off list.
E. We understand that vigorous debate is a part of any open discussion of issues, and very much encourage such postings on the site. However, the Preservation Virginia Forum reserves the right to eliminate members who post indecent or slanderous information.
F. Members should not post large files or pictures (no files larger than 1,000 KB), as many members have space limits on their email in-boxes. Instead, members may offer to send such pictures off list, or include links to articles or pictures. Because the forum is about buildings and preservation, low resolution images are permitted.
E. Membership in the list is not only for members of the branches of APVA Preservation of Virginia, but is open to any parties interested in preservation issues. Other groups encouraged to post information are neighborhood groups, community development organizations, architects, planners, college students and community activists.
This list serv for people interested in preservation is one of Connect Richmond's services. Connect Richmond offers community-building and capacity-enhancing tools for nonprofit organizations, civic leaders, volunteers, anyone working to maintain a healthy and secure quality of life for all citizens of the Commonwealth.
