My company, Tech Architects, is offering free 16 hours of technology services to non-profit organizations. As a participant in a non-profit organization, Precocious Academy, I've seen a number of questions and concerns about technology come across the Connect Richmond list service. Tech Architects is committed to serving Richmond's small business and non-profit community. We desire to function as your partner, "your technology department", if you will. To honor our own commitment to helping your mission to grow, we are offering 16 hours of free service. While that does not seem like many hours, let's consider what you can do with 16 hours: * 4 4-hour deskside/group technology training in the areas of HTML, CSS, Access, Excel, etc. * Update the information on an already existing website * Review/Implement new technologies on an already existing website * Design and Implement a small Access Database(Oracle, Sql Server or mySQL); possibly with a couple forms * Create an advanced Excel Spreadsheet or two * Add the hours to a larger technological service you desire This offer is only for non-profit organizations, both current customers and new. In addition to the 16 hours for free service, we maintain a support chat line on our website. We never charge for this service, and do our best to keep it staffed during prime business hours. Any and all technology questions are encouraged; if the staff member at the time can not answer your question. We will have an expert contact you within 24-hours with a good solution. Again, this service is also, free of charge. For those more technological "adventurous", we also have a virtual office space on this site. Please install Google's Lively software prior to visiting our site. We offer a brown bag session every third Thursday to share information on various technology new, old, open source, proprietary, simple, complex. Thank you for your commitment to our community. If we can help in anyway, please let us know. The City has granted permission to close the street and the alley beside Joe's. We'll be dedicating our new mural at the festival (at noon), honoring the children who painted it, and remembering our friend Jonny Z, in whose spirit and memory the mural-and the festival-were created. We'll have all the makings of a proper street festival: -Bizarre Market arts and crafts vendors -WRIR DJ's plus live music every half hour, including Liza Kate & Josh Small, Mason Dixon Disaster, Marshall Costan & Justin Bailey, WTGW (What the Girls Want), the Photosynthesizers, and the Antlers -food (sweet treats, sno-cones and lemonade from Joe's, plus whatever you want from inside the restaurant or from Shields Market) -tattoo and face painting -Jonny Z prints and T-shirts for sale -raffle drawings every hour -and a Spiderman moonbounce (Jonny's favorite). We'll also be painting another mural, together. Even the weather is cooperating, so come around on Saturday for merry-making in memory of His Goodness Jonny Z. Virginia Easy Access allows people to search for specific services in their communities. Content includes imbedded links that lead the user to more information on every topic. As its name indicates, Virginia Easy Access is specifically designed to be user-friendly with accommodations to make it accessible to individuals with disabilities. Virginia Easy Access is also a gateway to VirginiaNavigator, a listing of more than 21,000 programs and services across the Commonwealth powered by SeniorNavigator. The provider database is constantly updated to make available the most comprehensive listing of services and supports in the Commonwealth. Direct customer service for Virginia Easy Access is provided by 2-1-1 Virginia Call Center Operators. Citizens may utilize Virginia Easy Access to e-mail questions and receive assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Beginning in the Fall of 2008, Virginia Easy Access will enable citizens to complete a Medicaid application on-line and electronically submit it directly to the appropriate local social services agency for processing. Virginia Easy Access is part of the state's No Wrong Door initiative coordinated by the Virginia Department for the Aging. No Wrong Door offers individuals a simple, single point of entry for information on long-term support options, applications for benefits, and other supportive programs. Commissioner, T.C. Summ. Op. 2008-93 (July 30, 2008)). In this case a donor's charitable deduction was disallowed when his church failed to give the donor a statement with the "no goods & services language" in the acknowledgement letter. Despite the cancelled checks and the Tax Court's acknowledgment that the tithes were charitable gifts, the charitable tax deduction was still disallowed. The church finally sent a letter with the "no goods & services language" after the donors were audited, but since the letter was received after the return was filed so it was not "contemporaneous" The court case stresses the need for all charities to competently send to their donors a contemporaneous written acknowledgment for all gifts of $250 or more. While we need the rain, sometimes we get a little too much - remember Gaston, and sometimes we get the winds, as well - remember Isabel? Tornadoes often accompany hurricanes; three days after Isabel we had a tornado that damaged a considerable part of the city. The Red Cross Community Disaster Education Team is beginning to be really busy responding to requests for literature and presentations on disaster preparedness, as members of the community recognize their need to be informed. As a reminder, please take this time of calm weather to: * review hurricane preparedness brochures * think about what you might need to do to secure your property in the event of a hurricane * plan an evacuation route out of the city and have a place to go, one that will welcome any pets you might have * stock your disaster kit with water and shelf-stable food * ensure that you have at least a week's worth of prescription medications on hand * add to your cash reserves - try to have $500 in small bills for emergency purchases during power outages (credit card machines, check verifiers, and ATMs won't be working) * identify an out-of-town contact who can relay messages to family and friends * familiarize yourself with the emergency plans at your children's schools and care facilities, and your work place(s) * plan a family meeting place such as your church or library in case you can't get to your house If you know of an organization, school, association, church or other group that might be interested in a presentation on disaster preparedness, please let me know. We have 46 dedicated volunteers who love to do presentations. The Red Cross Disaster Management Team is working hard to prepare to help those in our community who may need assistance following a hurricane - thanks for doing your part to be prepared and spread the word.
