Message-ID: <00d401ca72b9$367fc5a0$a37f50e0$@davis@verizon.net> "What do you want for Christmas?" This is a question that gets asked often as the holiday season approaches. And if we're honest, much of the time when we think about how we would answer the question, we have material things on our minds. This study for adults is based on a book by James W. Moore, exploring the question of what we really want for Christmas. Does our heart long for the type of gifts that money can't buy? All are welcome to join us at Centenary United Methodist Church for this study which will be offered at the church over three Thursdays - December 3, 10, and 17 - at two different times. Our lunchtime study will be from 12 noon to 1 pm, and will offer soup, rolls, cookies and beverages for $2.00 a person. Our evening study will be from 7 to 8:30 pm, and will offer coffee and dessert. The church is located at 411 East Grace Street between 4th and 5th Streets. There is free parking available in the lot behind the church on Franklin Street. The posters were designed in order to stimulate a discussion on payday, car title and other types of predatory loans. Jay Speer, Executive Director of the Virginia Poverty Law Center (VPLC), and Dana Wiggins, Coordinator for the Virginia Partnership to Encourage Responsible Lending (VaPERL), provided the students with information and the many issues that arise from these types of loans. Laura Chessin, an Associate Professor at VCU's Graphic Design Department, teaches the senior seminar class and oversaw the project. The public is invited to come see these posters on Friday, December 4th from 6-8 p.m. at Main Street Gallery on 1509 W. Main St. in Richmond. The free viewing is an opportunity for people to not only see the work done by these students, but to also engage in a dialogue on predatory lending in Virginia. Anyone who has been touched by the loss of a child will want to consider being there. On Sunday evening, December 6, the Richmond community will join communities across the country in remembering our children who are no longer with us. This national Night of Remembrance takes place each year on this date and provides an appropriate occasion to celebrate the lives of children. We will gather at 6 p.m. at the Angel of Hope Statue in the Idlewood section of Hollywood Cemetery. Background In March 2004, Ty and Angela Johnson lost their eight-month old baby girl Reagan to Shaken Baby Syndrome. (A former babysitter was subsequently convicted of the abuse.) Two years later, in an effort to celebrate Reagan's life and bring hope to the many families who are touched by similar tragedies, Ty arranged for the purchase and dedication of Richmond's Angel of Hope statue. The Ceremony Please plan on joining us at 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 6 for the ceremony. Should you wish to participate, please bring a candle as well as a flower or other memento that you can lay at the base of the Statue. Directions to Hollywood Cemetery http://www.hollywoodcemetery.org/directions-north.html Follow the signs to the Idlewood section. I don't know the particulars of his situation. The caretaker we spoke to called 211 and subsequent referrals to no avail. We also called numerous agencies for assistance but most don't do this level of work or have year long waiting lists. I would hate to be a dead end for this individual in need. Any suggestions of organizations or faith based groups that would be able to assist??? We could get volunteers to participate in any work suitable for a volunteer but we do not have the expertise or protocol in project scoping and home repair and would need to work through a 3rd party nonprofit organization with that capability. Through a combination of member engagement and a 10-month leadership program, LMR seeks to educate, energize, and connect a diverse group of leaders to serve the Richmond Region. The Director of Finance and Administration is a key member of a 4-person professional staff. The primary responsibility for this position is the coordination of the organization's accounting and financial reporting functions. These activities are performed in conjunction with an outside, independent bookkeeper. The incumbent also maintains and updates the organization's fundraising database and supports the organization's corporate development and annual fund campaign efforts. In addition, this position provides staff support to several committees of the board including the executive committee. Other duties include human resources coordination and office administration. The ideal candidate will have several years of financial and fundraising database experience. Some exposure to human resources administration and general office management would also be helpful. Although the position is primarily administrative in nature, candidates will be expected to provide "hands-on" support to the organization's program activities. Prior experience in a non-profit would be compatible with LMR's focus on fostering servant leadership. A college degree in a business, leadership, or a social services field is preferred, but not required. In a bold move at the November 18th board meeting, VHS trustees voted to waive admission fees next year. This decision comes as part of a long-term strategy to promote access to the society's collections and remove obstacles to sharing history. Effective January 2, 2010, it will not cost guests any money to visit the VHS museum or research library. "In spite of a serious economic environment, the board unanimously agreed that we cannot balance the budget by pricing history out of the public's reach," said Virginia Historical Society President and CEO Paul A. Levengood. "I am pleased we can offer free admission in 2010. Although the highest a ticket price has ever been at the VHS is $5, that is still a barrier to some. I will do everything in my power to ensure that anyone who takes advantage of this opportunity will have an enjoyable, educational, and entertaining visit." "We will adopt a fundraising strategy to make free admission permanent," said Pamela R. Seay, Vice President for Advancement at the VHS. "VHS donors understand that the intrinsic value of history is far greater than the price of admission to a museum. The value of history is measured by what we learn from it." The VHS is presenting the following new exhibitions in 2010: Cold War Crisis: The U-2 Incident (January 16-May 30, 2010); Memories of World War II: Photographs from the Archives of The Associated Press (May 9-August 1, 2010); Bizarre Bits from Virginia: Oddities of the Collection (June 12, 2010-February 13, 2011); Virginia Rocks: Rockabilly Music in the Old Dominion (August 28-December 30, 2010); and Organized Labor in Virginia (September 4-December 30, 2010). The service will help us to move from feeling sad or lonely to experiencing the wonder and hope of Christmas. This means that all of the Order of Selection categories will be open, and DRS can now serve all new eligible clients and all clients on its waiting list. DRS is able to take this step due to funds from the Federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Funds) and successful stewardship of its other vocational rehabilitation (VR) appropriations. Individuals with disabilities still on the VR waiting list will be notified that they may be served and asked to schedule an appointment with their VR counselor if they still need VR services to become or stay employed. In addition, all new applicants who meet our VR eligibility criteria will be served, regardless of the severity of their disability. Currently, DRS has over 18,000 open cases, and it will be necessary to continue closely monitoring its fiscal situation. How long DRS can keep all Order of Selection categories open is very dependent on the number of clients served and their service costs. When Recovery Funds are exhausted within this fiscal year, DRS will revert to its regular VR funds. Its ability, however, to now serve all eligible individuals needing its assistance to become employed and live more independently is an exciting development. As such, the Richmond Business Council of the Greater Richmond Chamber has partnered once again with Richmond Public Schools to offer the 2010 Principal for a Day experience on Thursday, February 4 from 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. On this day, business and community leaders exchange their offices and boardrooms for classrooms at several Richmond elementary, middle and high schools and come together with key leadership at a debriefing lunch at the Richmond Technical Center's South Building (2020 Westwood Avenue) to discuss the experience. This opportunity is sponsored by Capital One and Genworth Financial. The program's goals are to immerse business leaders in the public school environment, to increase awareness of educational issues, to provide a platform for lasting partnerships between schools and businesses, and to enhance awareness of workplace skills that are necessary for students to succeed. Participants include the region's business community, non-profit sector, local government elected officials, and higher education leaders. Don't miss your opportunity to participate! In order to answer that demand, you have to make difficult choices about how to invest in the infrastructure of your own organization so that the programs and services your community needs can be delivered effectively. We'd like to get to the bottom of this question through an in-depth study at the hard choices that executives at nonprofits like yours are making. As part of that study, we are conducting a survey -- and we need your response so that we can get an accurate picture of how nonprofits are making organizational investments and building capacity. These services are part of our Project Safety Net, which aims to keep pets in homes and out of shelters by relieving financial and other burdens from households in need. ^Pet Pantry - This free service provides temporary pet food to households experiencing financial difficulty. Clients may apply for assistance online or download an application form at www.richmondspca.org/petpantry. They may also call 804-521-1323. Please note that we are always accepting donations of unopened dog and cat food for this program. ^Wellness Clinic - This low-cost service provides a preventive medicine visit for pets of households experiencing financial difficulty. Low-cost vaccines and medications may also be purchased. Clinics take place every Monday and appointments are required by calling 804-521-1320 or by e-mailing khall at richmondspca.org. Complete details, including price lists for medications, may be found at www.richmondspca.org/wellness. ^Spay/Neuter Clinic - This free and low-cost service provides spay/neuter surgeries. There is no charge for feral cats, pit bulls, rottweilers or for pets of clients who meet the income requirement, are on government assistance, or are full-time students. To learn more and to make an appointment, clients may visit www.richmondspca.org/clinic or call 804-521-1300. ^Sheltering Animals for Abused Families (SAAF) - Often a fear of leaving a pet behind in an abusive situation keeps women and families from seeking help. In collaboration with domestic violence shelters, the Richmond SPCA shelters pets of women and families who leave situations of domestic abuse. Currently there are four domestic violence shelters enrolled in the program. Pets in this program are sheltered at an undisclosed location, arranged by the Richmond SPCA. If you are unsure if your organization is enrolled, or would like to learn more about how your organization may participate, please call 804-521-1323. ^Providing Animals Affordable Temporary Housing (PAATH) - To prevent relinquishment of pets during a temporary housing crisis, we help pet owners secure temporary low-cost boarding at a private boarding facility. Housing for pets will be provided for up to 14 days at reduced rates. Free spaying and neutering and low-cost vaccines will also be provided as part of this program. Clients may enroll or learn more by calling 804-521-1323. ^Pet-Friendly Housing Guide - This free service lists pet-friendly apartment and retirement communities. The guide helps ensure that pet owners can find a place to move that allows pets and may be accessed online at http://www.richmondspca.org/petfriendly. ^Behavior Assistance - Recognizing behavior issues as a top cause of pet relinquishment, the Richmond SPCA has developed programs to assist pet owners. These include a free behavior helpline to answer specific questions (804-643-SPCA (7722) or behaviorhelpline at richmondspca.org), online resources (www.richmondspca.org/behavior), and in-person training consultations. ^Pet Rehoming Assistance - We offer pet owners free re-homing resources and guidance that enable them to find appropriate homes for animals they can no longer care for, rather than admitting them to a shelter. For complete details, clients may visit www.richmondspca.org/rehome or call 804-521-1306. The Richmond SPCA also offers a variety of pet visitation and companionship programs designed to bring love and warmth of animals to residents of local hospitals, nursing homes and retirement communities. To learn more about these programs, please visit www.richmondspca.org/companion. Thanks! Both services are appointment based and serve more than 15,000 clients annually. We are seeking input from other organizations that provide appointment-based services on how client no-shows are managed and/or discouraged. We're looking for ways, excluding the option of pre-payment with a credit card, that organizations reduce the number of clients who do not show up for their appointments. We currently make reminder calls but have no other methods in place for discouraging no-shows. Feedback is most appreciated and may be sent to Maya Erhardt at merhardt at richmondspca.org. Thanks!
