Dialogues for Change - Building Trust Across Divides of Race, Class and
Culture
Start the New Year by taking part in the first of Hope in the Cities series
of strategic dialogues on metropolitan Richmond issues. Highly trained
facilitators will lead a retreat for 25 participants over a 10 hour period.
The dialogues will address two critical questions:
. How can the region reconcile longstanding historical and cultural
differences that undermine trust, breed caution and prevent needed
initiatives?
. How can the region engage a new generation of emerging leaders in
designing and implementing a compelling regional vision for the 21st
Century?
The curriculum is based on both an academic and experiential learning model.
The focus is on enhanced regional cooperation with an emphasis on
understanding historical events that have led to present realities.
Ultimately participants will learn to build collaborative strategies to take
our region into the future.

We are looking at bringing in a volunteer coordinator and are interested in
how other organizations are currently handling coordination of volunteers.
Do you have a paid staff, volunteer person, FT, PT? Does a paid employee
have this as part of their job description? In your response if you could
please note the size of your organization.
THANKS in advance for the info!

Dear Friends
Out of shared friendship and concern Rabbi Ben Romer (congregation
Or Ami), Imad Damaj (Va Muslim Coalition for Public Affairs) and Rev
R. Charles Grant (Bon Air Presbyterian) are convening a gathering
for prayer for peace in Gaza and the Region. We will meet at Bon Air
Presbyterian Church, 9201 W. Huguenot Road, at 7 PM on Wednesday,
January 7. Other faith leaders will join us in our gathering.
In this tense time, and with the complexities of our shared but also
particular religious traditions, we wish to elevate public awareness
for the tragedies and bloodshed in Gaza (and throughout the Middle
East). We do not presume to have answers, nor is this gathering to
propose political solutions. We gather in solidarity with one another
and in prayer with one another and for peace in the region. The
gathering in prayer on Wednesday evening in the Social Hall of Bon
Air Presbyterian is simply our response.
We invite you to join us. If you wish to express your concern but
cannot be with us on Wednesday evening, feel free to send a colleague
or congregant to represent you and/or your congregation/
organization. This is an open gathering, so also feel free to share
this with your friends who might like to join us. We invite you to
share this announcement with your friends.

Dear after-school and out-of-school-time service providers,
United Way's Partnership for Out of School Time (POST) in collaboration
with the Forum for Youth Investment is collecting information on all out
of school time services offered in Richmond City. The Forum for Youth
Investment is a nonprofit, nonpartisan "action tank" dedicated to
helping communities ensure that young people are Ready by 21 - ready for
college, work, and life.
As an organization that serves youth, we need your help to gain a better
understanding of our community's current supports and services for
youth.
Please complete the survey at
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=l5V47GQ3X3RIlnJbEdsJow_3d_3d
developed by the Forum for Youth Investment by January 27, 2009. The
data collected will help us get a picture of the services, supports and
opportunities currently available to youth in our community. Upon the
completion of the survey you are invited to a breakfast at United Way,
sponsored by Altria, on January 28, 2009 from 8:30 to 10am. At the
breakfast you will learn more about Ready by 21, the Partnership for Out
of School Time and how you and your organization can help improve out of
school time services and supports for our community's youth.
We look forward to receiving your information!

Richmond area interested in the field of AIDS education, research or

Funding for the 2009 program is made possible by The AIDS Endowment, a
gift from Drs. John R. Cook and Waverly M. Cole. The Endowment is a

The Learning Disabilities Council (LDC), a respected, all-volunteer, aging, local service organization is on the verge of dissolution. We want to contact a group of energetic young parents and/or professionals who could use a proven organization to help them support the needs of learning disabled children.
The LDC was founded in 1973 in Richmond, VA, as learning disabilities were beginning to gain attention and recognition. At the time, the LDC filled a serious need for leadership and advocacy. We believe the need for advocacy and action on behalf of children with learning disabilities today is as great as ever. The components of an organization (see website) are in place and ready for "take over". Available are:
*The name, P.O.Box, and telephone number (established & familiar since 1973).
*The website www.ldcouncil.org.
*"Learning Disabilities Directory" (59 pp statewide directory), on disc, waiting to be updated and reprinted.
*"Understanding Learning Disabilities, A Parent Guide and Workbook" (254 pp book), on disc, waiting to be updated and reprinted.
*A Support Group for Adults with LD and ADHD (on-going since 1997).
*By-laws, records, a history, and a good name. For many years, until 2 years ago, the LDC was a United Way agency for selected giving.
*Initial guidance from retiring volunteer director, plus a small treasury to support the LDC's revival.
Is there any group or organization of younger parents or professionals, with a related mission, that wishes to carry on the work of the Learning Disabilities Council? All who are seriously interested are asked to contact the following by the end of January, 2009:

Nessa Baskerville Johnson, noted Storyteller, author and genealogist
will be the first guest speaker for the 2009 Center for African American
Genealogical Research Workshop, held at Richmond, Virginia's William
Byrd Community House.
Ms. Johnson's presentation reveals how her "family research" led to
uncovering a church parish's genealogical lines and subsequently, what
she along with a cadre of citizens did to utilize a city's genealogy
structure to penetrate and cause a shift in political, economic,
artistic, and other systems. The movement set the stage to embrace
Reconciliation of the past and the races locally, statewide and on 3
continents.
She presents this thesis in her books, "A Special Pilgrimage," "Monsieur
Tortoise, ESQ. and the Realm of Cosmic Riches." {By the way "Cosmic
Riches" translate into Richmond.} and the galley, "Jubilo Now!" Her
inquiry now to Leaders, Followers, CEO'S, Pastors, cultures, school
children and the like, "What's Next, beyond the Imaginable?"
After the presentation, there will be a hands-on genealogy research
session for those interested in discovering their roots, from no matter
what continent.
There are many genealogists available to answer your questions and help
you learn more and get hooked on genealogy!
William Byrd Community House is a Technical Learning Center for CAAGRI.
We present an African American Genealogy workshop on the 2nd Saturday of

January kicks off National Mentoring Month 2009!
Virginia Mentoring Partnership (VMP) invites you to join us in recognizing
mentoring month and Thank Your Mentor Day?, January 22, 2009. On that day,
many Americans will reach out to thank or honor those individuals who
encouraged and guided them, and had a lasting impact on their lives.
There are several ways to participate in National Mentoring Month & Thank
Your Mentor Day:
1) Contact your mentor directly to express your appreciation
2) Pass on what you received by becoming a mentor to a young person in
your community
Learn more about how you can help change a life through mentoring.
Call Virginia Mentoring Partnership at (804) 828-1536 or visit us at
www.vamentoring.org.
3) Make a financial contribution to a local mentoring program
Visit www.mentoring.org to find a mentoring program in your area
4) Write a tribute to your mentor and post it on www.WhoMentoredYou.org
Visit www.whomentoredyou.org
Thank Your Mentor Day? is an initiative of the Harvard School of Public
Health.
What is National Mentoring Month?
Held each January, the NMM campaign mobilizes community volunteers to help
young people achieve their full potential. Research has shown that
programs that rely on volunteer mentors can play a powerful role in
reducing drug abuse and youth violence while greatly enhancing a young
person's prospects for leading a healthy and productive life.
Last year, more than 375,000 individuals responded to the campaign by
seeking information about local mentoring programs that need more
volunteers.
On behalf of the mentoring community in Virginia, VMP is pleased to
announce that President George W. Bush, President-elect Barack Obama, and
General Colin L. Powell will headline the 2009 National Mentoring Month
volunteer recruitment drive. Visit: www.NationalMentoringMonth.org to
learn more.

Please make plans to join VAFRE for a special half-day workshop on February
3rd at the Jepson Alumni Center at the University of Richmond. Our session,
Donor Communications Boot Camp, features speaker Tom Ahern, ABC, and is
scheduled from 8:55 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Take advantage of special cost
savings for the workshop by registering more than one board member, CEO, or
other representative from your organization (see details below).
Be more successful as a fundraiser. Raise more money. Retain more donors.
Attract lots more bequests and other planned gifts.
And how do you achieve all those gains? By understanding how donor
communications really work.
In this 3-part seminar, customized for the Virginia Association of
Fundraising Executives, attendees will advance from novice to pro in four
hours of instruction. In these brisk, heavily illustrated, utterly practical
sessions, attendees will learn the best-kept trade secrets of top
fundraising pros from across the English-speaking world.
You'll learn why the UK has three times more charitable bequests than the
US. You'll learn why arm-twisting and "educating the donor" are misguided
strategies. You'll learn how to put the latest psychological findings to
work; making persuasion a sure thing, rather than guesswork.

Please consider attending this important event at Lewis Ginter Botanical
Garden:
"Gardening in an Era of Climate Change: Is the Sky Really Falling?"
Feb. 4, 5, and 6
Are we are really living in an era of extreme changes in climate? Or
are green industries re-examining horticultural best practices in light
of an always-changing climate? "The right plant in the right place"
takes on heightened meaning when we realize that our USDA zone reference
points are gradually changing. The world of horticulture is being
transformed by environmental, societal, and technological changes; the
boundaries of our knowledge and practice are being tested by the
challenges of introduced insects and pathogens, invasive plants, and the
shifting climate. This symposium focuses on how design and operational
practices can serve as models for sustainability and environmental
stewardship and turn today's horticultural challenges into tomorrow's
opportunities.
An event for green business owners and their staffs, landscape
architects and designers, master gardeners, and seasoned home gardeners.
* Allan Armitage on industry changes and sustainable practices
* Felder Rushing on gardening innovations
* James Urban on soil remediation and urban tree systems
* Richard Bir on woody landscape plants
* Kennon Williams on shaping the land for natural hydrology
This symposium is one of the Garden's special events marking its 25th
Anniversary in 2009, and is funded by the Robins Foundation. LGBG is
presenting this symposium in partnership with the Central Virginia
Nursery and Landscape Association (CVNLA), which will celebrate its 40th
anniversary in 2009. The event will be CVNLA's traditional winter
short course.

This message has been released on behalf of the Richmond SPCA.
Connect Richmond,
The SPCA is starting the new year with a goal to meet or top the 13,000 free
and low-cost spay/neuter surgeries it performed last year and is offering
free spay and neuter surgeries for all owned cats through March 31, 2009.
Feral cat surgeries are always free. This offer is open to cats whose owners
live in the City of Richmond or the counties of Chesterfield, Hanover,
Henrico and Goochland. There are no income restrictions and kittens weighing
2 pounds or more qualify. Appointments may be scheduled online
or
by calling 804-521-1300. Please note that appointments for feral cats may
not be scheduled online.
These surgeries are a vitally important part of the SPCA's efforts to reduce
the pet overpopulation problem in our community, which is especially high in
many low-income neighborhoods. Please let families you may know about this
opportunity.

Message-ID: <400F7BC67F05F241B03A739B5F4A0464EA8BF1@uwsms1.yourunitedway.org>
Dear Out of School Time Provider:
United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg has set a goal that all
children and youth in our community develop positive behaviors and
successfully transition into adulthood. Through the Partnership for Out
of School Time (POST) Coalition, a coalition of educators, funders,
service providers and advocates that is staffed by United Way, we seek
to increase the quality and accessibility of services and supports for
children and youth in our region.
To that end, United Way and POST are working with the Forum for Youth
Investment to create a Richmond Ready by 21(r) Youth Program Landscape
Map. The Forum for Youth Investment is a nonprofit, nonpartisan "action
tank" dedicated to helping communities ensure that young people are
Ready by 21 - ready for college, work, and life.
United Way and POST share the Forum's vision that all children and youth
in our community are supported in the following ways:
* Learning: developing positive basic and applied academic
attitudes, skills and behaviors
* Working: developing positive vocational attitudes, skills and
behaviors
* Thriving: developing physically healthy attitudes, skills, and
behaviors
* Connecting: developing positive social attitudes, skills, and
behaviors
* Leading/Contributing: developing positive civic attitudes,
skills, and behaviors.
As an organization that serves youth, we need your help to gain a better
understanding of our community's current supports and services for
youth.
Please take a moment to complete the survey developed by the Forum for
Youth Investment. The data collected will help us get a picture of the
services, supports and opportunities currently available to youth in our
community as well as identify any gaps.
You will find the survey at the following link:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=l5V47GQ3X3RIlnJbEdsJow_3d_3d. The
length of time required to complete the survey is approximately one
hour. If you have multiple youth programs within your organization,
please complete the survey for each program. Please note that you only
need to complete the organizational overview once. We appreciate you
helping us to get the most comprehensive data possible by forwarding
this survey to any other organizations you know that serve youth ages
5-21 years of age.
Thank you for taking the time to provide critical information that will
help foster and support an improved system of youth services in our
region. As a thank you for your participation, Altria is sponsoring an
appreciation breakfast on January 28, 2009 for all who have completed
the survey; more information about the breakfast to follow.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact Sandra Booth
at 771-5830 or Heather Turbyne-Pollard at 771-5827.

growers who wish to grow produce and provide value added products for
market. Participants will gain valuable knowledge about the business of
growing for market.
The CRC has lined-up over a dozen dynamic individuals who will be
offering their skills and expertise to our new and experienced growers
in the Central Virginia area and beyond. Classes offered this year
include: Market Gardening - Where Do I Begin? Biodynamic Gardening
and Farming, Increasing Your Yield by Working With the Rhythms of Your
Soil; Irrigating a Lot of Stuff With a Little Water; Urban Gardening;
Four-Season Growing; Business Skills for Farmers; Production and
Marketing of Shitakes and Oyster Mushrooms; Farmscaping and Pest
Management; Customizing Marketing Opportunities; and three separate

This year's workshop is brought to you thanks to the generous support of
Whole Foods Market and the Virginia Farm Bureau. Virginia Farm Bureau's
Save Our Food campaign was designed to educate consumers about the foods
they eat and encourage everyone to seek out and enjoy all of the
delicious locally grown foods available. It's the first, and most
important, step anyone can take toward supporting Virginia agriculture
and helping to ensure that Americans will never become dependent on
foreign sources of food. To learn more, please visit SaveOurFood.org.
A limited number of scholarships are available on a first come, first
served basis. Please call 804-314-9141 for additional information.

Chattering Children has offered spoken-language programs for children
with hearing loss in Richmond since 1999. We do not use sign
language. Children learn to listen and talk and live fully in
mainstream life.
We are pleased to announce that we now have a morning toddler class,
an afternoon preschool, full-day kindergarten and an all-ages play-
based program from 2.30-5pm, Monday-Friday. Tuition is on a sliding
scale basis, dependent on income.
A Parent Support Group meeting takes place monthly, the next one is
Monday 19th January from 7-8.30 - babysitting is provided. This group
is free and parent-initiated.

Crisis." Our Speaker will be Richard "Rip" Rapson, president and CEO of the
Kresge Foundation.
Those words are no longer strangers to any of us. Even the seemingly
impenetrable walls of our strongest foundations are falling victim to the
weakening dollar. What's the answer? Strategic Philanthropy, Mr. Rapson
will tell us how Kresge will use its philanthropic resources wisely and
advisedly to help weather the storm.
Rip Rapson has been president and CEO of the Kresge Foundation since 2006.
Before coming to the Kresge Foundation, he was President of the McKnight
Foundation, a $1.8 billion private foundation in Minneapolis. Prior to his

BBB has just moved to Moorefield Office Park. We have lots of once-used

Anyone who has purchased these boxes knows how expensive they are.
We have plenty to give away. Also several mirror/picture boxes.
Ideally, we can keep these boxes in circulation throughout the NFP

Just let us know...and get them out of our office

Attention local non-profit community members,
I recently hosted an in-person forum at the University of Richmond to
discuss what the non-profit community feels should be the priorities
of the new mayoral administration. We are looking for more people to
register for the online forum to continue this valuable dialogue. The
outcome of the deliberation is open-ended, but I hope that the group
will be able to present something to Mayor Jones. Thank you for your
interest and the directions to register are below. Please contact me

Our Parenting Skills for Today?s Families workshops use components from the

involves not just parents or children alone, but the whole family so bring
your children, spouses or primary care takers along. It was developed as a
preventative strategy for children 6-12 years of age and provides a
comfortable family setting where we will together to reinforce family bonds.
We assist families in using important tools such as communication,
conducting family meetings, rewarding positive behavior and handling
negative behavior. We believe the most important part of our program is
sharing quality time with your child while learning new skills. The most
immediate results are improvements in children?s pro-social behaviors,
mental status, and grades combined with reductions in aggression, violent
behavior, and substance abuse. The program is widely used with all kinds of
families. Teachers, administrators, guidance counselors, school staff, PTA

Subject: [ConnectRichmond] The Closing Of The Grace House/ Free Household
Items
Message-ID: <20169511.1233005607831.JavaMail.root@mswamui-andean.atl.sa.earthlink.net>
Dear Supporters, Donors, Volunteers, Friends and Family:
The Grace House, which is a part of AROS INC a non-profit organization, is closing its doors effective, February 10, 2009. AROS INC will continue to operate and offer outreach services from a location to be determined in the future.
I would like to thank everyone who had a hand in helping to make The Grace House a success. Since opening the house November 1, 2006 we have assisted 19 single women (some with children) with housing and other supportive services. Many of the women arrived homeless living in their car with nowhere to go. We have also provided assistance to non-residents and agencies that requested our help.
My sincere thanks to all who supported AROS INC and The Grace House either with their prayers, friendship, donations, and/or administrative assistance. A special thank you to all the dedicated volunteers. We could not have done it without your support.
The big question is ?What is next and the honest answer is ?we don?t know, but I am sure God has a plan. Right now we have a lot of work in front of us to close The Grace House. Continue to pray for us as we move forward.
Below is a list of items from the house that can be picked up by non-profit agencies providing direct care to families in need. We especially would like the donations to go to single women with children living in a stable housing environment. We have a lot of nice furnishings. The pick up dates are February 12 - 14, 2009 as follows:
Thursday, Feb. 12th ? 2:00 PM ? 5:00PM
Friday, Feb. 13th ? 9:00 AM ? 12: Noon
Saturday, Feb 14th ? 9:00 AM ? 1:00 PM
If you are interested or know someone who could benefit from these items, please contact me via email at arobert at arosinc.org or call 804-267-1882.

Beyond "Eating Disorders:" Why We Need to Rethink Everything We Thought We Knew
Susan Bordo
Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, 7:00 pm
Alice Haynes Room, Tyler Haynes Commons
Times have changed since eating disorders were thought to be the rare and 'bizarre' afflictions of white, privileged girls with over-demanding moms. Today, eating and body-image problems are a global phenomenon, affecting males as well as females, and forcing us to re-examine all our assumptions, not only about the causes of these problems, but just where the 'disorder' lies: in the individual, or in a voracious, out-of-control consumer culture? Susan Bordo is a Professor of English and Gender and Women's Studies at the University of Kentucky where she holds the Otis A. Singletary Chair in the Humanities. Her books include The Male Body: A New Look at Men in Public and in Private and Unbearable Weight: Feminism, Western Culture, and the Body, which was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year in 1993. Subject: [ConnectRichmond] Maximizing Tax Refunds
Message-ID: <4D2D15203BDA2C4E8F7356EE47B3A9D4015A41FF@CHM0010CP3MB01.ds.irsnet.gov>
Taxpayers should look into the numerous tax breaks available and take
every credit, deduction and exclusion for which they qualify. People who
had less income in 2008 could find they qualify for credits for which
they previously did not qualify. And there are several new benefits this
year:
* First-Time Homebuyer Credit: Those who bought a principal
residence recently or are considering buying one should take note. This
unique credit of up to $7,500 works much like a 15-year interest-free
loan. IRS.gov
has more details and answers to common questions.
* The Recovery Rebate Credit: This credit is figured like last
year's Economic Stimulus Payment except that Recovery Rebate Credit
amounts are based on tax year 2008 instead of 2007. Most people already
received their full benefit in the form of the Economic Stimulus
Payment. However, a taxpayer may qualify for the Recovery Rebate Credit,
if, for example, he or she did not get an Economic Stimulus Payment, had
a child in 2008 or had a change in income level. If you receive this
credit, it will be included in your refund and will not be issued as a
separate payment. See the Form 1040 Instructions, Fact Sheet 2009-3 or
the information center
on IRS.gov
for details.
* Standard Deduction for Real Estate Taxes: Taxpayers can claim
an additional standard deduction, based on the state or local real
estate taxes paid in 2008. The maximum deduction is $500, or $1,000 for
joint filers.
* Mortgage Workouts and Foreclosures: For most homeowners, these
are now tax-free. Eligible homeowners can exclude debt forgiven on their
principal residence if the balance of the loan was less than $2 million.
The limit is $1 million for a married person filing a separate return.

Hi - BBB has 6 or 7 tall lateral filing cabinets located at its former
location, 701 E. Franklin Street. These cabinets are "OK", certainly
used but very functional.
We have some other office furniture and book cases at 701 E. Franklin.
We also have two meeting room tables - one is 8', reasonably oval. It
seats 8-10. Dark wood
Second table is 7', also dark wood.
Both tables are very sturdy. Both are OK, both could use a good
polishing, the smaller maybe could be refinished but can be stained by
anybody.
Both tables are at our new location at 720 Moorefield Park Drive off of
Midlothian Turnpike.
All of the furniture is functional.
Please email quickly.

Spaces Competition: Registration Open!
Message-ID:
(IN)PLAY SPACE: 2009 GREEN SPACES COMPETITION
A property that is "in play" is a property at risk. Our current development
decisions put into play a series of events that dictate the future
environmental, social, and economic course of a property for generations to
come and far beyond the immediate development impacts and costs. Play Space
is a place that aspires to change the way we look at development. It is a
place that looks to the future and aims to provide the support necessary to
achieve carbon neutrality on a community scale.
Challenge:
This year's "Play Space" challenge is to design a sustainable outdoor play
space that will serve as a cultural, environmental, and economic amenity for
the surrounding neighborhood as well as a teaching tool to educate children
and adults about their environment. It is a two-year challenge with 2009
serving as Phase I (in) and 2010 serving as Phase II (out).
Teams will register in either professional or student categories and their
entries will be judged and presented at the Green Spaces Forum on April
16th, 2009 in Richmond. In addition, the City of Richmond's K-12 afterschool
programs will compete on the same site to design a playground by reusing or
repurposing the materials from on-site condemned buildings. Registration
costs are $50/Board for professional entries and $25/board for student
entries. All fees will go toward supporting the forum announcing the winners
on April 16th at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.

GreenSpaces website to read more

The Richmond Peace Education Center is once again sponsoring a Peace Essay Contest for students of all ages this spring. This year?s prompt asks students to write about an African proverb, ?Peace is costly, but it is worth the expense.? Students will consider what that proverb means to them, and how it might apply to their lives, and to their community and the world.
Students throughout Virginia, from Kindergarten through grade 12 are eligible to participate. The contest will be judged in four age divisions: primary (K-3), elementary (4-5), middle school (6-8) and high school (9-12.)
The contest offers a top prize of $100 for each of the four age groups. Each division also has a second prize of $50, third prize of $25, and five $20 honorable mentions. The deadline for entering the contest is April 20, 2009. Winners will be notified by June 1.
Entries must be no longer than 1000 words long. Entrants must submit two copies of their essays, along with a completed entry form. Details, rules and entry forms are available in both PDF and Microsoft Word format online at www.rpec.org.
