The consequences for allowing these "charity insiders" to benefit improperly from the organization (i.e. private inurement) can carry stiff financial penalties or even revocation of tax-exempt status. In this timely paper, attorney Karl Emerson explains private inurement, provides the legal perspective on issues such as excessive compensation, intermediate sanctions, and determining "fair and reasonable" compensation. You will also learn how a charity can establish a "rebuttable presumption" that will demonstrate to the IRS that the organization followed appropriate steps in setting compensation. This is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the new IRS compensation guidelines. Karl E. Emerson is an attorney with Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads, LLP in Philadelphia and a nationally recognized speaker on nonprofit compliance issues. What were the issues that led soldiers to call the Hotline from US military bases around the world? What are they and their families most concerned about? Why do they call the Hotline instead of using military counseling? What kind of information and counseling can Quaker House offer these soldiers and their families? On Sunday, June 7, at 1:15 pm, GI Right Hotline counselors Steve Woolford and Lenore Yarger, who are Quaker House staff based in North Carolina, will share the realities of military life that they hear by telephone everyday. These stories are far different from the slick recruiting ads on TV or radio, stories that show that the victims of U.S. wars are not only those counted dead on the battlefields. Medical problems, depression, anxiety and suicide are at a new high. How do soldiers and their families handle multiple deployments? Do hard economic times add to the overall stress? This event will take place at the Richmond Friends Meeting, 4500 Kensington Avenue. The program is part of the Quaker House 40th Anniversary Speaker Series. The GI Rights Hotline provides free, confidential information and counseling to service members, veterans, potential recruits, and their families. Quaker House is a 40 year old military counseling and anti-war organization based in Fayetteville/Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Quaker House is a lead member of the national GI Rights Hotline, a coalition of organizations that operate the 24-hour counseling hotline. Matches may start as early as 6:00pm or as late as 10:00pm. Play and socialize - all skill levels welcome. Did I mention how many of our couples have met at the club? The presentation will include an overview of the LEED ND (neighborhood development) rating system and sample projects that have gone through the pilot program. Bob Newman, Vice President and COO of Better Housing Coalition, will present on "The Choices we Make." His presentation will focus on the work of Better Housing Coalition, which has been very successful over several decades in strengthening distressed communities through attractive and thoughtful community and architectural design. Anthem LemonAid is a weekend-long fundraising event. Children's Miracle Network Richmond established this fundraiser to provide a unique way to get involved and give back to the community by helping to treat children with cancer. This year's event will be held across central Virginia, the Roanoke Valley and Hampton Roads from July 17-19. By setting up a lemonade stand you have the opportunity to raise money and awareness, and help in the fight against pediatric cancer in Virginia. We invite families, community organizations, childcare center and all area businesses to help "put the squeeze" on pediatric cancer and set up an Anthem LemonAid stand July 17-19. *Registration is FREE and includes a complimentary LemonAid kit with lemonade mix, cups, a pitcher and promotional signage. Registration is still open but limited!! To register a stand and receive your complimentary kit, please visit our website at www.childrensmiraclenetwork.net/lemonaid or call (804) 228-5929. For public relations please contact Scott Golden at (804) 787-0740. Your involvement and support of this event enables our outstanding, local pediatric facilities to continue their commitment to provide the highest quality of care to its patients and their families. We hope you will put us on your summer calendar and choose to support Children's Miracle Network Richmond and help "put the squeeze" on pediatric cancer. Some fun things to consider with Anthem LemonAid: Have you considered registering an Online LemonAid Stand? It's not too late! This is the second year, in addition to our traditional LemonAid Stands set up around the Richmond area we are offering the ability to register a stand ONLINE. Each dollar raised will be donated to your local Children's Miracle Network hospital to help treat children with pediatric cancer. All you need is a goal for your stand, a few family and friends' email addresses, and you've got yourself an Online LemonAid Stand. Stands will be active from the date you sign up until Friday, July 31st. Last year's event raised over $110,000, a number we hope to exceed this year - a goal which can only be accomplished by getting the community involved. To further engage our young participants with the hope of inspiring others through creativity and imagination, each year we offer a Most Festive Stand Contest. Your family will have a chance to win 4 tickets to King's Dominion! This year, Children's Miracle Network Richmond is initiating the 1st Annual Childcare Challenge. The childcare center that best outfits their stand with the "Kids Helping Kids with Cancer" theme will win a party at the Richmond Kangaroo Jac's location *some exclusions apply regarding age of children eligible. More than 150 Richmond area businesses participated in the 7th Annual Anthem LemonAid raising a significant contribution of $35,000. This year, marks the 3rd Annual Office Challenge and we are happy to announce that the office that raises the most, either with your stand alone or in conjunction with the coin drive, will win a $200 gift certificate for breakfast or lunch from Jason's Deli! Additionally, we are initiating the 1st Annual Change a Child's Life-an office/retail coin drive leading up to LemonAid weekend. As early as July 1, businesses can reserve their own coin canister and organize an office coin drive to raise funds for pediatric cancer treatment. Participating offices can then visit the kick-off stand for a glass of LemonAid and lunch at the James Center Plaza on Thursday, July 16th, turn in collected coins and receive an award for the office! Call (804) 228-5929 for details. *If your company is participating in Anthem LemonAid we encourage you to find out more about a Matching Gift Program. The sooner a borrower takes action, the more likely he or she will be to save their home. Housing Opportunities Made Equal of Virginia, Inc. (HOME), a non-profit HUD certified housing counseling agency, announces the publication of a self-help kit for homeowners that will walk them through the steps they need to take to avoid foreclosure. ------- If you are behind on your mortgage, there are many things that YOU can do to help save your home. Because many HUD-approved housing counseling agencies are experiencing extremely high call volumes and may not be able to get back to you quickly, HOME is making this self-help kit available at no cost to give you the tools and information you need to take action on your own. If you are facing foreclosure, you may feel overwhelmed by confusing messages and advice. Regardless of the reasons you are behind in your mortgage, there are steps YOU can take that will help. The sooner you take action, the better chance you will have to find a solution that will work for you. Step 1: Go to www.phonehome.org and download the kit called "How to Help Yourself Avoid Foreclosure". Step 2: Open the mail from your mortgage company! (Ignoring it will make things worse: you need to know what they are asking from you). Step 3: Work on a budget and try to save money. * The first question your mortgage company will ask you is "What is your budget?" * Try to save money to go towards your past due payments as this shows your lender you are serious. * Ask yourself what you can delay or eliminate from your budget and do it. * Try to find ways to increase your family's monthly income. Step 4: Contact your mortgage company * Your lender may agree to help you work out your loan. Ask for someone in the Loss Mitigation or Loan Workout department. * Ask your lender if you qualify for any of the new Making Home Affordable federal programs. Step 5: Be careful about scams There are many companies out there that may try to take advantage of you. Many of them try to confuse you by using names that sound as if they are part of the federal government's foreclosure prevention program. Be aware of "quick fix" plans, and don't pay anyone before they have done what they say they will. If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is! If you are caught by one of these scammers, call your local Better Business Bureau or the Bureau of Financial Institutions at 800-552-7945. Step 6: Call for help * Contact a HUD-approved housing counseling agency (1-800-842-2610 or www.hud.gov/offices/hsg/sfh/hcc/fc ) that can: Advise you on your options - Come up with a plan - Help you contact your mortgage company. * Contact an Attorney. There may be protections in the law that could keep you from foreclosing. Based on your circumstances, legal advice may be free, or at a very low cost. Many Church Hill residents were floored by this report as it's not representative of what they have experienced. Matt Conrad, a community member, worked with the Richmond City Police Department to learn more about the crime statistics and has produced a report that sheds a lot of light on the original study. He found that crime is not only down from a few years ago, but is dramatically down from 6 and 7 years ago. Last Friday, NBC12 posted a second story that presents errors in the original study that named Church Hill on the "top ten" list. As a resident of Church Hill, I hope you'll take a moment to learn more.
