I am working with Alix Spiegel on a piece about osteopenia. We would like to talk to women in their 50's who are currently on a drug for the PREVENTION of osteoporosis - a drug such as Boniva, Fosamax, Actonel, Aredia, Didronel, Zometa or Reclast (generic or brand for any of them). These women usually have t-scores that put them in the category called "osteopenia" but it is not osteoporosis. If you fit the criteria and would be willing to be interviewed (only for radio - no tv cameras), please contact me at ggrayson at npr.org or Alix Spiegel at aspiegel at npr.org. THANK YOU! The topic, in our continuing series on The Common Good is "Dead Aid: The Moral Imperative to Find a Better Way in Africa." The talk by Dambisa Moyo is at NOON on Monday, Nov. 16 in the Modlin Center for the Arts. The talk will be followed by a lunch reception. NOTE THIS IS A TIME CHANGE FROM PREVIOUS ANNOUNCEMENTS AND FROM THE BROCHURE. Tickets are free but required and available by phone at (804) 289-8980. Economist Dambisa Moyo unflinchingly confronts what she sees as one of the greatest myths of our time. In the past 50 years, more than $1 trillion in development-related aid has been transferred from rich countries to Africa. There are three types of aid: humanitarian or emergency aid, dispensed in response to disasters; charity-based aid, disbursed by organizations; and systematic aid, paid directly through government-to-government transfers or through institutions like the World Bank. Not only has this aid not improved the quality of life for Africans, it has hurt more than it has helped. Moyo argues that foreign aid should be phased out and replaced with innovative ways to finance development including trade with China, accessing the capital markets, and microfinance. Suggesting that Western leaders are so desperate for answers about Africa that they will listen to anybody's advice, she dismisses today's celebrity culture of philanthropy and bashes the likes of Bono and Bob Geldolf. Born and educated in Zambia, Dambisa Moyo brings to her subject a rare combination of academic expertise and world experience. Her training in economics took her from the World Bank to Harvard University and on to Oxford University, where she obtained her doctorate. She also worked for eight years at Goldman Sachs. The author of Dead Aid: Why Aid is Not Working and How There is a Better way for Africa, she was named one of Time's most influential people in the world for 2009. For the past 17 years Saxon has collected over 100,000 pairs of shoes from the community to help those in need in our area. "Each year Saxon Shoes donates hundreds of new shoes to children in need through programs with the United Way and other community organization," says Gary Weiner, president of Saxon Shoes, "and during the holidays we invite our customers and community to help us help others by donating the useable shoes in their closet that they just don't wear anymore for men, women, and children." This year, we are reaching out the community to further involve local schools, churches and other organizations in the collection process. All participating organizations will be listed on our website (http://www.saxonshoes.com) as a drop off location as well as in an eblast sent to our database of 15,000+ households. The program is very easy to execute and will make a great impact in any organization with hands on Holiday Assistance. Participants would be responsible for spreading the word to their colleagues and providing a collection box with signage to promote the program provided by us. I have attached a registration form which can also be done online at http://www.saxonshoes.com/shoesfortheneedy/. Saxon Shoes has been in business since 1953. Jack and Gloria Weiner opened their tiny shoe shop with nothing more than a few dollars and a dream. Today, Saxon Shoes is owned by that very same family and has grown to become one of the largest independent shoe stores in America. Customer satisfaction has always been a priority at Saxon. The staff is especially well-trained to help customers find the best shoes and they strive to reach beyond the sale and out into the community, always searching for ways to meet the needs of people. Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to working with you on this most worthy Holiday program. A free registration is required in order to download the CVHPA's planning reports from our website. Bon Secours Richmond Health System's Missions Department provided support to the CVHPA to assist with an update to their 2003 assessment of the health needs of the Hispanic and Asian populations in the greater Richmond area, which focused on the Counties of Chesterfield, Hanover and Henrico and the City of Richmond and on immigrants who have lived here three years or less. The current assessment also includes the area's African population, due to its growth in the area since the previous needs assessment, and was expanded to include immigrants who have been in the area longer than three years. An advisory group of more than twenty representatives of health and human service providers, community groups, and community resources that serve the immigrant and refugee populations participated in identification of the health care resources for and needs of these populations. Furthermore, the advisory group meetings provided guidance on the gaps in health services and the priority health needs of the area's growing immigrant populations. On Tuesday, November 10, at noon, Eugene Trani, former president of Virginia Commonwealth University (1990-2009), will discuss and sign his latest book with writing partner Donald E. Davis, Professor Emeritus of History at Illinois State University. Distorted Mirrors traces American prejudices toward the Russia and China by focusing on the views of influential writers and politicians over the course of the twentieth century. The authors show where American images of Russia and China originated, how they evolved, and how they have often helped sustain foreign policies generally negative toward the former and positive toward the latter. The book marks a fresh approach to U.S. relations with these countries, emphasizing long-term attitudes that influenced policies rather than the reverse. It shows us that perceptions shaped over the course of the 20th century are crucial for their bearing on the 21st, particularly if those unrestrained prejudices reemerge. On Friday, November 13, at noon David L. Robbins, the best-selling author of nine novels including War of the Rats, will discuss and sign his book Broken Jewel, a powerful story of war, love, and survival set against the backdrop of the Los Ba?os prison raid-one of the most daring episodes of World War II. Set in a WWII prison camp in the Philippines, Broken Jewel is a deeply moving epic of love and heroism. Robbins is currently writer in residence at his alma mater, the College of William and Mary. Bryan, the father of Richmond historian Charles F. Bryan, Jr., was one of a number of academic folklorists who captured, preserved and performed Appalachian folk music in the 1940?s and 50?s. ? Called ?song catchers? by the mountain folk, these musical detectives dragged bulky and fragile recording equipment into rural areas to document the authentic musical expression of a simple people isolated from the growing complexity of American society. ? In addition to his teaching and research, Bryan was well-known as a performer, accompanying himself on the mountain dulcimer. ? Before his untimely death at the age of 44, he began using the musical vocabulary of Appalachian folk song as the foundation for his own more complex compositions. The November 21 st concert will feature the One Voice Ensemble singing several of Bryan?s short compositions and excerpts from a longer work, ?The Bell Witch,? a secular cantata based on the famous southern ?haint tale? of the cursed and haunted planter, John Bell. ? Guest soloists Anne O'Byrne and Raymond Elmore will be featured as John and his daughter Nancy. ? Miss O?Byrne, accompanied by David Fisk, will also perform several Irish and Celtic folk songs, illustrating the role of those traditions in the development of Appalachian folk music. ? Mr. Elmore will sing a group of songs in memory of J. Robert Bradley, an African American bass mentored by Charles Bryan. ??????????? A requested donation of $15 will be received at the door. ? Message-ID: Please join us this Saturday, November 21, for a celebration to mark the 175th Anniversary of St. Joseph's Villa. The celebration will begin at 10:00 in the Villa chapel. We will have remembrances from some of the Daughters of Charity who used to work here and from some of the people who grew up here. We will receive special proclamations from the City, Henrico County, the governor, the General Assembly and the U.S. House of Representatives. There will be music, and we will show some movies about the Villa's history and what it was like to live here. After the ceremony, we will have "open houses" at most of the cottages, so you can learn about the many programs here at the Villa that change lives. We also will have a display of many of our historic artifacts. (With 175 years of history, you knew we had to have a few things we could display!) There will be children's activities courtesy of the Children's Museum of Richmond and musical entertainment courtesy of Collegiate School. We will also have the new coffee table book, "St. Joseph's Villa," available for purchase at a special price ($25, reduced from $29.99). The 128-page full-color book, published by Dementi Milestone Publishing, presents a full history of St. Joseph's Villa and includes dozens of photographs from private collections that have never been gathered together before. It is an amazing publication, and all of us are very proud of it. Wayne Dementi, the publisher, and George Bruner, the author, will be at the Villa next Saturday to personally inscribe each book. All of the events are free, so we hope you will come and stop by for a while. We will also have lunch available, for only $5.00 per person. I hope you can plan to stop by and see us next Saturday. We'd love for you to join us in celebrating the Villa's 175th Anniversary! C. Jan Swearingen, professor of English at Texas A&M University, will deliver this annual lecture sponsored by the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation, Hampden-Sydney College, and the Library of Virginia. Swearingen received a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for her study of Henry and Davies: "From Church to State: Rhetoric, Religion, and the Transformation of Liberty in Colonial Virginia, 1740-1776." Her work involved research on the Scottish background and immigration of Patrick Henry's family and on the history of Presbyterians in Virginia, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania, where Samuel Davies and many other Presbyterian "dissenting" clergy were educated. The lecture is free and is followed by a reception. The Library of Virginia is located in historic downtown Richmond at 800 E. Broad Street. We need your help to document what is going on in Virginia. Here are some stories that have been sent in the past: - "Prior to a our announcement going out on Connect?s email group, the Department of Medical Assistance Services received only 7 inquiries in nearly nine months. Once the announcement was sent through ConnectRichmond, it helped produce almost 7,000 public comments in just two days." - ?Connect helped give my organization the more than 10,000 donated books we needed to further our mission and serve thousands of children and families throughout the Richmond community!? - ?As a member of the statewide Preservation Forum email list, we posted information and requested the members write an email and/or attend the public hearing to show support of the Battersea easement. We observed an incredible response. People from all over Petersburg and Virginia rallied on our behalf. As a result, the Petersburg City Council voted unanimously to place a conservation easement in Petersburg.? - " I learned of seminars, meetings, and conferences that have helped me to develop some new skills (grant-writing, for one) and make numerous connections. I also learned of a grief recovery program a local organization was conducting. That made a huge difference in my life." Here are some other questions that may help in thinking about what has happened: How has using connect helped you and led to a positive change in our community? Who have you connected with that you wouldn?t have otherwise? What happened after you shared information through the email group or Web site? How has Connect saved you time or money? Have you found services you didn?t know existed that helped a client or led to partnering? Please email your story to networkinfo at connectnetwork.org. Please see course description below. If you have an idea for a related student project that would provide a learning experience for students and insight on this topic, please let me know. There is very little scholarship being done in this area, especially at the local level. Projects are not limited by organization type and the nature of the project is wide open so send whatever ideas you may have. It is a graduate class and students will work in small groups, so we will only be able to do a few projects. Please email nbstutts at vcu.edu. It is difficult to reach me by phone. Thanks very much. Course Summary: Leadership and Change in a Networked Society Spring 2010 One of the most promising aspects of today's rapidly changing mass communications is the belief that fast, free and open knowledge sharing has the potential to allow people to participate in decision making processes, to gain access to power in new ways, to influence government and public policy, simply, to share their views publically and be heard in ways equal to the way elected officials and people with easy access to mass media were heard in the past. Whether this promise is being realized or the lines of access between the haves and have-nots are being drawn more sharply than ever is the subject of debate. There is little evidence-based scholarship to support either claim. This exploratory course is a highly participatory look at the emerging forms, tools, uses and understanding of technology-enabled social networks as vehicles for social change. The course will begin with a brief overview of the social capital and leadership studies literature and incorporate largely contemporary readings on social networks and social change. Because the field is emerging, most existing documentation regards national or international change efforts. The class project will focus on understanding change efforts at the local level. Students will work in small groups on community-based, online civic-engagement and citizen-action efforts. Research partners may be as diverse as the public library, a for-profit local on-line news source or local nonprofits. Main text: Dahlgren, P. (2009).
