GRASP is a non-profit organization that assisted almost 17,000 students during the 2008-2009 school year in developing an educational game plan for after high school and helped students secure the funding to pursue that route of secondary education. Or, if you have an item you would be willing to donate to the silent auction, we would appreciate it! This fun evening will start with a reception, silent auction and cocktails and will be followed by a live auction and dinner. Master of Ceremonies, Dr. Bill Bosher, and many elected and appointed officials from the Senate and House of Delegates of Virginia, local law enforcement agencies, City Council, Boards of Supervisors, School Board Members, and Superintendents will join us for this inspiring evening. We are proud to announce our Keynote speaker, Gary Gore, Managing Director, Mid-Atlantic Region, US Trust Bank of America, Private Wealth Management. September's Topic: Strengthening Funding Strategy with Measurement and Evaluation Today's current economic climate demands that nonprofits and other organizations demonstrate accountability in compelling and meaningful ways. Neglecting measurement and program evaluation impacts both public recognition and the reputation of nonprofit organizations, which may ultimately result in reduced funding and threats to sustainability. This presentation will explore how measurement and program evaluation enables your organization to meet increasing funder demands and continue strategic movement during the economic downturn. This month's presenter, Trina Willard, is Vice President of Transformation Systems Inc., a small women-owned change management consulting firm that has served government, nonprofit, and business organizations since 1994. Trina provides organizations with research and evaluation services that inform planning and future development. Her methodology typically focuses on the implementation and effectiveness of programs, policies, and procedures that help clients guide decisions with the power of information. Prior to joining TSI, Trina served for ten years as a researcher in the Virginia state government system, including eight years as Chief of the Evaluation Unit of the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, Criminal Justice Research Center. Over the past 15 years, she has presented research findings and recommendations through several government reports, professional presentations, and training events. DRAWING FOR FREE MEMBERSHIP! Following in the wake of Blackwell and Dove Court, two former public housing communities demolished in recent years, local officials have proposed the demolition and redevelopment of Gilpin Court and Fay Towers. These North Jackson Ward communities are home to nearly 1000 families. While redevelopment can create new communities with quality housing, many residents and their allies worry that redevelopment may result both in a net loss of public housing (one of very few housing options affordable to Richmond's poorest families) and in communities that exclude many of the very residents who once called them home. On September 15, 2009, at 6:30 PM (registration starting at 6 PM), RePHRAME will co-sponsor the 2nd Annual Community Forum on Public Housing Redevelopment. The event will be held at Fay Towers Activity Room, 1202 North 1st Street in North Jackson Ward. Fay Towers was chosen to host the meeting because it is part of the area in North Jackson Ward that Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) plans to redevelop. Refreshments will be provided, and children are welcome. Speakers at the event will include John Banks, President of the Fay Towers Tenant Council; Linda Couch, Deputy Director of the National Low-Income Housing Coalition; and Rev. Tyrone Nelson, Pastor of Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church in North Jackson Ward. Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones has committed to attend. Other invitees include the members of Richmond City Council; Anthony Scott, Executive Director of RRHA; and the members of the RRHA Board of Commissioners. RePHRAME is an alliance of public housing residents, allies, and community groups. It formed in 2008 to make sure public housing residents in Richmond have a voice in the redevelopment process. RePHRAME's priorities include a guarantee that public housing units torn down or sold off through redevelopment are replaced on a one-for-one basis with like-kind units (for example, if a three-bedroom unit is torn down, replacement by another three-bedroom unit), and that residents displaced by redevelopment have a right to return to the new communities created by redevelopment. We encourage you to take a few minutes to answer this survey. -------------------------------------------------------- The V3 Campaign is seeking answers from you! Too many in the public and media as well as our policy makers are unaware of the economic and social impact of the nonprofit sector. When it comes to addressing the problems of poverty, education, public health and environmental quality, the nonprofit sector is leading the way in producing solutions. These solutions, however, could have an even greater impact if they were leveraged through more powerful and enterprising partnerships between nonprofit, business and governmental forces. The V3 Campaign has these issues in mind as it becomes part permanent campaign and part nonprofit organization. This hybrid will become both resource center and advocacy arm for nonprofit organizations nationally, with an eye towards a global initiative. The V3 Campaign has partnered with ConnectNetwork, American Humanics, and Virginia Network of Nonprofit Organizations to launch this survey. This survey runs from September 10 - September 30, 2009, with findings presented in October. Please follow this link to take this 15 minute survey. The survey answers will help the V3 Campaign determine how nonprofit employees and leaders would like to see this exciting campaign develop and will produce information that we can present to those who run for office so that they will better understand the vast untapped power of the nonprofit community. All around the world, growing urban populations are seeking communal spaces-parks, squares, plazas, piazzas, green ways and gardens-as essential components of daily life, places of respite and reflection, recreation, and celebration. This symposium will examine timeless principles of design-whether applied to the creation of a residential garden or a public space-that connect us to the natural world and in so doing, fulfill man's innate desire for association with other living things. The symposium honors the legacy of Charles F. Gillette, a leader in the field of landscape architecture, by engaging the public in a conversation about the importance of landscape design and the value of Gillette's ideals of elegance, superb craftsmanship, and seamless blending of architecture and garden. CEUs and other training credits have been approved or are pending for APLD, ASID, ASLA, National Garden Club, USGBC & VSLD. The event will celebrate three distinctive additions to the collections. First, the Edward Peeples Collection of digitized photographs and documents will be recognized as the 1,999,999th addition to the VCU Libraries. From 1959 to 1964, Prince Edward County, Virginia, chose to close its public schools rather than integrate them. Through photographs, documents, and maps, this collection explores the history of Prince Edward County segregation in the 1950s and 1960s. Dr. Edward H. Peeples, Emeritus professor at VCU, photographed over 100 images of schools in the county and environs in 1962 and 1963, documenting the disparity between African American and white facilities. Also included are contemporary images of the schools and events surrounding the anniversary of the 1951 student strike and other occasions, as well as additional published and unpublished materials on the topic. The Peeples' collection is available through the online digital collections at http://go.vcu.edu/peeples. The 2,000,000th addition to the collections is Marvel Comics "Amazing Spider-Man, #583" featuring Barack Obama. The selection of this landmark comic is especially appropriate for VCU and for this moment in history. It highlights and celebrates the historic election of the 44th President of the United States; VCU?s proud tradition of diversity; and the remarkable scope and vibrancy of the Comic Arts Collection held by the VCU Libraries. VCU?s Comic Arts Collection is one of the largest of its kind in North America, with over 125,000 items in the collection, and includes comic books, graphic novels, manga, editorial cartoons, comic strips, memorabilia, comic journals, fanzines, and a broad array of reference materials. It also includes the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards Archive, awarded each year to outstanding expressions of comic art and recognized as the ?Oscars? of the comic world. Preliminary results found 1,061 people in the region experiencing homelessness during the one day count conducted this past July. Compared to last year's summer count, this overall number reflects just over a 10% increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness. Specific highlights from today's announcement included: Economic Indicators * This July, 47 people indicated owning properties which had been foreclosed, with 27 experiencing foreclosure as renters o Of these, 18.5% experienced foreclosure within the past year * 11.8% of people surveyed indicated they had declared bankruptcy at some point in their lives * 44.1% of respondents had been laid off. Of those, 45.5% had been laid off within the past year * The employment rate is lower (25.8%) among those surveyed. In addition, the number of people working full-time is lower (50.0% vs. 61.0%) * 17.8% reported that they had income from panhandling or asking strangers for money in the past year. Children * 12.7% of adults surveyed have children living with them * From July 2008 to July 2009, the number of children held steady with just a slight (1%) increase. Last Permanent Housing * Richmond - 52.8% (July 2008, 50.2%) * Chesterfield - 6.7% (July 2008, 9.0%) * Henrico - 12.0% (July 2008, 10.6%) * Hanover - 1.8% (July 2008, 2.0%) The median length of homelessness is ~150 days, which is consistent with findings from the point-in-time count conducted in July 2008. January 2007 January 2008 January 2009 OVERALL POPULATION Total point-in-time 1,150 1,073 1,150 Total children in Point-in-time count 139 153 136 UNSHELTERED POPULATION Unsheltered 149 166 184 July 2007 July 2008 July 2009 OVERALL POPULATION Total point-in-time 940 958 1,061 Total children in Point-in-Time Count 138 153 155 UNSHELTERED POPULATION Unsheltered 138 146 135 "While the overall number of those experiencing homelessness is slightly down from the winter, we do see from this most recent survey that the numbers are up from last summer," said Kelly King Horne, Executive Director of Homeward. "These seasonal differences are critically important as agencies prepare for the upcoming winter months." The twice yearly point-in-time count reveals a snapshot of the number of people experiencing homelessness on a single day and collects detailed information on their service usage and service needs. The data gathered during this process allows for analysis of the barriers surrounding housing stability in the region and what it would take to end homelessness. The point-in-time count is primarily conducted in the City of Richmond and the counties of Chesterfield, Hanover and Henrico in cooperation with area social services and law enforcement agencies and emergency and transitional shelter staff. The data includes sheltered and unsheltered families, children and unaccompanied adults. For more information on Homeward or to read details from the point-in-time count, visit www.homewardva.org . Monday Sept. 28th 5pm Message-ID: <98E2C1D58C9D45C899470E0BA972A3ED@nc6220> AFTERGLOW Potluck Music Jam and Art Inspiration Cavort When & Where: Monday, Sept. 28 5pm Paradise Park (Fan District pocket park bordered by Grove, Floyd, & N. Allen Aves, and N. Vine St.) Entrance is through alleys on 100 blocks of N. Allen Ave. or N. Vine St. Beware street parking is by permit north of and including Floyd Ave.! They will ticket you! Background: This event is the brainchild of a brief meeting with Reggie Pace, band leader of No BS Brass Band, due to his interest to curate a Music Series in Paradise Park. We spoke about many ideas around music including one that Preston Duncan (visual artist, poet, writer for RVA Mag, among other things!) had thrown onto the pile to have a jazz jam that poets gather to listen to and spontaneously write and share these written pieces in between "sets" inspiring each other and the musicians. As Reggie and I could not agree upon any weekend dates to have a specific band before the days and evenings get too cold to enjoy an outdoor concert, I said, well maybe I'll just have another potluck before the end of fall and Reggie got really excited about a potluck! The next thought was Music Jam, Poets.etc! What It Is: Apparently not much musically happens on a Richmond Monday night (the only night of the week that Reggie seems to ever be schedule-free!) so we decided to go for a Potluck Music Jam incorporating Preston Duncan's idea of a poet spontaneous inspiration, elaborating to all art disciplines' spontaneous inspiration. So bring your favorite food to share and bring your creative tool(s) of choice and a light and let's see what happens! What To Bring: * Food enough to share (We will have paper plates and plastic ware, cups but if you are able to bring your own utensils and plates, cups to up the Green Factor that would be very welcome!) * Your own beverage(s) (No Alcohol in the park) * Your InLight Lanterns (or your own favorite lantern - no open flames in the park) * Your creative tools of choice: instrument, pen and paper, sketchpad, feel free to dance, photograph, film, sing(?) during the music jam We will not be painting the park and graffiti will not be welcome. Just in case you were wondering! Eat, listen, get inspired, watch, participate, collaborate, relax, enjoy! Needs: * Tables * String lights * Donation of paper plates, utensils, cups Music Series of Music inspired events will be organized for the spring and maybe summer! Stay tuned! Please let me know if you are able to help out with any of the needs ASAP! Hope to see you Monday for some fun! Thanks! Tickets are free but required and are now available by calling (804) 289-8980. His appearance in Richmond is as part of the Jepson Leadership Forum, the marquee speaker series of the Jepson School of Leadership Studies. This year's theme for the speaker series is "The Common Good." Jepson.richmond.edu for the full line-up. About this talk: "The reduction of violence on scales large and small is one of our greatest moral concerns," so wrote Steven Pinker in his groundbreaking The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature. "We ought to use every intellectual tool available to understand what it is about the human mind and human social arrangements that leads people to hurt and kill so much." Has human life become more or less violent over the centuries? What should we expect, based on our understanding of human nature? And what have been the major trends, and what has caused them? Pinker will discuss the features of the human mind that lead to violence as well as those that lead to peace, and how the balance between them has shifted over time. With his light touch and deep intelligence-and with examples from everyday speech and pop culture-Pinker demonstrates how our words reflect the thoughts we think, the emotions we feel, and the relationships we hold. About the Speaker: A native of Montreal, Pinker is Johnstone Family Professor of Psychology at Harvard University and has also taught at Stanford University and, for 21 years, at MIT. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, has won a number of teaching prizes, and was named among Newsweek's "100 Americans for the Next Century." The walk inward symbolizes letting go of the barriers and busyness that stand between ourselves and the Divine. The middle of the labyrinth is where we center on the Divine, reflect on truth and love, contemplate in quietness and relax in the Divine's presence. The outward journey helps us process how our encounter with the Divine affects our relationships with ourselves, others and the planet. The first Tuesday of each month (October 6, November 3 and December 1) from 6-9 p.m., Good Shepherd UMC (9155 Hungary Road, Henrico, VA 23294) invites you to bring quiet to your mind and soul. Each walk takes 30-45 minutes. To complete the walk by 9 p.m., arrive no later than 8:30 p.m. There will be a brief intro?duction to the history of the labyrinth before you walk. Guides will be available to assist you. Children ages 7-11 are invited to walk the labyrinth with an adult. Weather permitting, the October walk will be outside on the front lawn. In the event of inclement weather, the walk will be in the main church building. Please enter from the front glass doors. We are interested in communicating with the coordinators of other TR programs in the Greater Richmond area. We would like to meet on a quarterly basis to share programming ideas and resources and to access other programs to which we could refer clients whom we cannot serve. If you are interested in joining us in this resource exchange, please email or call me. If you would like to start a TR program in your agency or organization and would like to attend our next meeting, email or call me. Telephone reassurance programs offer security and friendship for older adults isolated in their homes. The programs are usually run by volunteers and are free to clients. Depending on the program, clients are called one day to seven days a week. Some programs have an actual physical telephone bank from which calls are made. Some programs assign clients to specific volunteers who call from their homes. Sheryl L. Luebke, M.Ed.
