Additional opportunities will be available in Harrisonburg, Roanoke and SW Virginia. VIVA Requirements: 1. You embrace and live out values like Integrity, Responsibility, Respect, Achievement, and Compassion 2. You possess a passion for teaching positive values to young people 3. Our goal is to help organizations like Boys & Girls Clubs deliver consistent messages and develop continuity in character education. The staff of the clubs where you will be working understand the Values in Alignment Process and will fully support your volunteer efforts. In addition, as a VIVA, a Values Institute staff member will help ensure that your teaching experience is a good one for both you and the youth. We will provide phone and on-site support and will reimburse you for transportation and supplies you purchase to enhance the teaching experience. Bad things can happen at nonprofits, too! Employees, guests, customers, property, equipment, vehicles, and the services you provide - all have inherent risks for economic loss. This session covers both identification of risks at your organization and what to do about them. Attendees will learn different risk transfer and reduction strategies, including contracts, insurance, safety, training, and physical controls. Examples of problem and solution choices will be discussed. $20 includes light refreshments. Monday, October 13th, 1pm-4pm, Program Evaluation 102: Making the Connections - Harrowgate Elementary School, 15501 Harrowgate Road, Chester, 23831, with Gail Merridew. This workshop introduces the use of logic models in evaluation planning. Logic models are popular tools used to represent relationships between program needs, goals, objectives, activities, and outcomes. Making these connections provides a road map for both understanding and evaluating an organization's programs. Anyone associated with program planning or providing outcome information to funders or the public will benefit from this session. $20 Tuesday, October 21st, 8:30am-5:00pm, IRS Form 990s: Form Changes, Preparation & Evaluation - The Cameron Foundation, 24 West Old Street, Petersburg, 23803. The dual purpose fundraiser is performed as such: your non profit sells Bentley Bears (or has someone sell them for you), and you receive 30% commission for those sales. The Bentley Bears will be donated by your organization to a non profit that focuses on children or to the children within your own non profit. For example, Helping Hands Organization (my non profit) has a goal of selling 1,500 Bentley Bears in a three week time frame that will be donated to five organizations that we have chosen that focuses on sick, impoverished and grieving children. We are targeting large corporations to do the selling for us since we don't have the staff currently to perform that many sales. When we reach our goal (and we will!), we will have raised $9,000 for Helping Hands Organization to assist with our overhead expenses. There have been other non profits interested in running this type of fundraiser that I will be working with to help them set their goals, determine who to sell to and who to have sell for them, as well as helping with deadlines and other information. There is no out of pocket expense for the organization, there is no experience necessary, and it's fairly easy to do! If you would like more information, I will be happy to meet with you in person to give you further details. Please give me a call at (804) 878 - 9656. REGISTER*** Inaugural Virginia Latino Pilot Project (VALPP) to meet December 5 RICHMOND - Virginians from across the Commonwealth (non-profit- and faith-based organizations, representatives from state, county and city governments, public health experts, journalists, law enforcement officers, business owners, social service providers, faculty and school administrators) will join with consular officials from Washington, DC, on Friday, December 5, 2008, at Ramsey United Methodist Church to learn more about --- and help solve --- some of the many difficult problems facing the region's fastest-growing community. The all-day event --- 'Latinos in VA: Understanding and Working Together with Our New Neighbors' --- has two main goals: Increase the non-Latino community's general understanding of immigration issues and the challenges faced in the United States by recent immigrants from Latin America; and, create a new model of community outreach that can be used to help other immigrant groups from different parts of the world. Armed with recent academic studies of Virginia's surging Latino population, along with information from focus group discussions with local immigrant families and an historic door-to-door survey of Latino homes conducted by student Red Cross volunteers, all conference participants will be invited to contribute their ideas in the crafting of blueprints for a variety of projects across the state that will help unify existing resources in different localities and better coordinate local education efforts and outreach programs in the months and years ahead. "The Virginia Latino Pilot Project forum will be an opportunity for all Virginians to learn from and with members of the Latino community, students, faith-based institutions and other organizations," said the conference's chief organizer, Peter Von der Lippe, manager of International Services for the American Red Cross in Richmond . "It will be an opportunity to learn about the underlying causes of migration and collectively explore possible solutions. And, perhaps most importantly, it will showcase the value of involving students and learning from them," he added. In addition to the American Red Cross and the Richmond-based Colaborando Juntos (CJ) coalition of non-profit organizations, other groups that have agreed to co host the event so far include the Virginia Latino Higher Education Project (VALHEN), the Creciendo Juntos (CJ) group from Charlottesville, the Virginia Public Health Association (VAPHA), Virginia Asian Chamber of Commerce (VACC) and the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (VAHCC). Every month an advisory committee including representatives from these groups, as well more than 30 other critical partners, meets to finalize plans for the December 5 community forum at Ramsey United Methodist Church . Once they are ready, the documents will need to be reviewed by the Department of Planning and Budget, Secretary of Education, and Governor's Office.? During any of the above steps, any of the agencies can require additional changes, or a 30-day public comment period may be required. If an additional 30-day public comment period is not required, then VDOE will have the regulations published in the Virginia Register, which then initiates the 30-day adoption period. Hugs and Kisses is a play about safe and unsafe touch that is aimed at elementary age children to help them to be aware of unsafe touching as well as to know what to do if it happens to them or if they see it happening. This performance was developed in the early 1980s and has been traveling all over the state for 25 years helping children to know that there are safe people they can tell their "secrets" to and therefore helping to keep children safe. The play will be performed at schools in Petersburg and Dinwiddie this year, however many of our communities and schools have refused to allow it into their schools. Thank you! ======================================= EXPANSION OF WAITING LIST FOR VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION SERVICES Due to recent state budget cuts, after November 15, 2008, all new applicants for services by the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services, even those with the most significant disabilities, will be placed on a waiting list for services. Those being served as of November 15 will continue to be served. As required by the federal Rehabilitation Act, those placed on the wait list will be referred to the Virginia Workforce Centers and other community resources for assistance to help them obtain employment. DRS managers hope that enhanced scrutiny of case services expenditures and numerous internal cost containment strategies will enable them to address the waiting list sooner rather than later. Therefore, it is imperative that schools, Community Service Boards, Centers for Independent Living, and other sources continue to refer individuals to the VR program so that their eligibility can be determined and they can be placed in the queue to receive services when new resources do become available.
