You have experience teaching and/or mentoring middle school-aged youth (raising your own children counts) 4. You must attend a half-day or one-day training session (depending upon level of prior experience) 5. You must be willing to learn the curriculum and guide the 10 one-hour sessions at a youth group located near you. Learn more about the curriculum on our website, www.ValuesInstitute.org. If this sounds like something you would like to do, contact us to learn about opportunities and training classes: or or 804-775-6433. Our goal is to help organizations like Boys & Girls Clubs deliver consistent messages and develop continuity in character education. The staff of the clubs where you will be working understand the Values in Alignment Process and will fully support your volunteer efforts. In addition, as a VIVA, a Values Institute staff member will help ensure that your teaching experience is a good one for both you and the youth. We will provide the materials and supplies you will need for teaching the 10-session. In addition, we will provide phone and on-site support. But the present economic conditions, and early signs of those to come, will challenge the very fiber of every nonprofit organization. Declining revenues, and in some cases disappearing revenues, are colliding with an expected exponential increase in the demand for services to form a perfect storm for nearly every nonprofit organization. So, how are nonprofit leaders to react?" Get the answer to this question, and many others during a workshop presented by Randy P. Howard, President of 501 Advisors, Inc. With over 30 years of business and nonprofit financial experience, Mr. Howard draws on his broad experience to offer realistic advice and multiple strategies for leading and managing your nonprofit organization during challenging economic times. He will share his know-how based on real experience, specifically, his current position as CFO of a nonprofit human service agency facing a 10% revenue shortfall. This valuable workshop is being offered by The Cameron Foundation free of charge to all nonprofit managers. Space is very limited and reservations will be taken on a first-come-first-served basis. Contact Najmah Thomas at nthomas at camfound.org or 804-732-8900 to reserve your seat at one of the sessions today. In November 2005, the Foundation awarded Connect Richmond a grant to support the ConnectRichmond.org Web site's "Health Section Capacity-Building and Maintenance" project. The Foundation's investment in and partnership with Connect Richmond will make a measurable impact on the way local healthcare organizations access the information resources they need to provide quality health care to local citizens. The grant provides a $4,000 stipend for a full-time, two-month, summer 2009 fellowship to an undergraduate or graduate student who has demonstrated an interest in health and community change and attends an institution of higher education in the Richmond region. The fellowship will entail working with the local health provider network to identify information gaps and research vital local health issues identified by local healthcare community leaders. Additionally, the fellow will assist in the improvement of the current health section and the entry of new data into the Web site's content management system. The fellow will write a final report of his/her achievements to present to the Foundation. Research and technical training will be provided by the ConnectRichmond staff. The successful candidate will be a conscientious, detail-oriented individual with strong research and writing skills who is able to work independently. Interested students should fill out the application form using this link: http://www.connectrichmond.org/portals/1/rmhf.doc. All applications must be delivered by 12:00 p.m., Monday, April 27, 2009. The five most promising candidates will be contacted on or before Friday, May 1 to schedule an interview for the week of May 4. The fellow will be announced on May 11, 2009. The social sector has experienced rapid growth during the past decade as baby boomers sought second, more fulfilling careers. This rapid growth now gives way to a leadership gap, as the exodus of retiring boomers leaves many organizations looking for competent and qualified leadership. The country is facing an unprecedented economic crisis that is curbing philanthropic support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and state and local governments. This decrease in funding is causing fierce competition for resources. Finally, individuals of all ages, but especially those in the Millennial generation, are turning to their computers, the internet, and technology in order to find opportunities for effective engagement and avenues to effect social change. The manner in which President Obama leveraged technology to engage people in the political process bears witness to the potential of technology to create an engaged public and to foster innovative new approaches to address our significant social challenges. The Phoenix Project and the Corporation for National and Community Service, together with their partners, will explore the role of technology in fostering social innovation and strengthening communities at the 2009 Accelerating Social Entrepreneurship Conference. Though the conference is a one-day gathering of students, faculty, social entrepreneurs, government leaders, and philanthropists, the conversation and the serious work of improving lives will continue well after the conference. We invite you to join us, and the over 200 others who have already committed themselves to this conversation and to answering the call to service by registering to attend the 2009 ASE Conference in person or online. Final reminder: early bird registration discount ends tomorrow, Tuesday, April 14. Register now and take advantage of the savings. Other dates and deadlines to keep in mind: * Tuesday, April 14: Early bird registration ends. * Friday, April 25: All registration options (DC, Hampton Roads and Webcast options) close for the conference. * Wednesday, April 29: Pre-conference attendee roster distributed To register for the conference before the early registration deadline, please visit: www.aseconference.org. Getting free help for your nonprofit organization or municipal agency is just a few mouse clicks away! We encourage you to attend a community meeting on Thursday, April 30th at 11:00am at the Tabernacle Baptist Church Community Life Center (418 Halifax St) at which we will describe this year's program and answer your questions. Students are excited to work on a variety of projects for Petersburg organizations, including developing marketing plans, conducting research, planning events, writing development plans, and more. Imagine having extra hands and minds this summer to finish that long neglected project that would really move your organization forward. Our students stand ready to work with you to accomplish your goals and have a wide range of backgrounds and majors. Students joining us this summer are pursuing studies in business, government, communications, public policy, criminal justice, environmental science, dance, and many other fields. We look forward to talking with you about more ways in which we can add value to your organization this summer and further our mission to prepare the next generation of social entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders in Virginia. The first step is to fill out our online form to propose your project: http://phoenixproject.org/reach_out/community_outreach_form/ As you are thinking about projects to propose, it might be helpful to consider the following: * Students will be working on community projects from June 22-July 25; * Usually teams of 4-5 students will be assigned to work on each project that is accepted; * Students will be supervised by seasoned nonprofit professionals, meaning that you will only need to be available to provide information, input, and guidance during the process, but not to supervise them on a daily basis; * Though we will try to accommodate as many requests as we can, it may not be possible for us to tackle every project during the summer, so please help us prioritize your requests if you are submitting multiple project proposals; * Projects that include a learning and growth opportunity for the engaged students are preferable, and as part of our program requirements, students are not able to perform clerical and office tasks during their work with the community organizations; and * Students will be provided office space and equipment by the Phoenix Project, so you don't have to worry about providing workspace. After we receive your form, we will get in touch with you to discuss the project further. And don't forget about the community meeting on Thursday, April 30th at 11am at the Tabernacle! We look forward to working with you, and our students look forward to learning from you this summer! Project submissions are due by May 15th. Deborah Coleman will be lead supervisor and point of contact for this summer's community-projects. Deborah is owner and principal consultant of The Coleman Group, LLC, a management consulting practice that specializes in organizational effectiveness. Prior to founding the Coleman Group, Ms. Coleman spent twenty-five years in the telecommunications industry developing management expertise, serving most recently as Vice President and General Manager of a major division of AT&T.
