Tickets are free but required and are now available by calling (804) 289-8980. His appearance in Richmond is as part of the Jepson Leadership Forum, the marquee speaker series of the Jepson School of Leadership Studies. This year's theme for the speaker series is "The Common Good." Jepson.richmond.edu for the full line-up. About this talk: "The reduction of violence on scales large and small is one of our greatest moral concerns," so wrote Steven Pinker in his groundbreaking The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature. "We ought to use every intellectual tool available to understand what it is about the human mind and human social arrangements that leads people to hurt and kill so much." Has human life become more or less violent over the centuries? What should we expect, based on our understanding of human nature? And what have been the major trends, and what has caused them? Pinker will discuss the features of the human mind that lead to violence as well as those that lead to peace, and how the balance between them has shifted over time. With his light touch and deep intelligence-and with examples from everyday speech and pop culture-Pinker demonstrates how our words reflect the thoughts we think, the emotions we feel, and the relationships we hold. About the Speaker: A native of Montreal, Pinker is Johnstone Family Professor of Psychology at Harvard University and has also taught at Stanford University and, for 21 years, at MIT. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, has won a number of teaching prizes, and was named among Newsweek's "100 Americans for the Next Century." During its 2009 session, the Virginia General Assembly adopted Senate Joint Resolution 321 designating October as Disability History and Awareness Month in Virginia and calling upon the Governor "to encourage the people of the Commonwealth, including public schools, institutions of higher education, the business and corporate community, civic and advocacy organizations, the faith community, and other interested entities, through education and other appropriate activities, programs, and events to promote and highlight Disability History and Awareness Month in Virginia."? ? In the resolution, the General Assembly also recognized the efforts of alumni of the Youth Leadership Forum (YLF), sponsored by the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities, whose advocacy efforts prompted the legislature's action.? Following passage of the resolution, those YLF alumni, with support from parents, teachers, and the Virginia Board, the Partnership for People with Disabilities at Virginia Commonwealth University, the Virginia Department of Education's Division of Special Education and Student Services, and the Technical Assistance and Training Center at Radford University, developed a bank of resources to increase students' understanding and awareness and to support development of activities to commemorate Disability History and Awareness Month in their schools and communities.? ? Links to those and other RESOURCES, as well as to the General Assembly's joint resolution, have been posted at WWW.VABOARD.ORG/OCTOBER.HTM to encourage commemorative and educational activities all across the Commonwealth which will, in the words of the General Assembly's resolution:? "increase public awareness and respect for persons with disabilities, inform the public concerning their many contributions to society...and emphasize the abilities and rights of disabled persons."? ? ? ================================================== ? ? Richmond?s Making Strides walk is one of more than 165 walks being held across the country this year. More than 4,850 women in Virginia will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year, and more than 1,140 will die from the disease. Funds raised through Making Strides will help the American Cancer Society save lives and create more birthdays by helping people stay well by taking steps to prevent cancer or find it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking research; and by fighting back by encouraging lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation?s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. "STIMULUS" FUNDS ENABLE OPENING OF ADDITIONAL "ORDER OF SELECTION" CATEGORY? ? In April 2009, the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services (DRS) opened its top category (individuals with most significant disabilities) under its Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Program's Order of Selection policy because of "stimulus" funds received from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).? As of October 1, 2009, DRS has now opened its second highest category for individuals with significant disabilities with two serious functional limitations (SD-2).? DRS will be notifying the 900+ SD-2 waiting list individuals that they may be served and asking them to schedule an appointment with their VR counselor if they still need VR services to become or stay employed.? In addition, new applicants who meet DRS eligibility and SD-2 criteria will also be served.? ? The last two Order of Selection categories (significantly disabled with one serious functional limitation and non-significantly disabled) will remain closed until such time that DRS has sufficient funds to provide individuals in those categories with services under an Individualized Plan for Employment.? Sycamore Street, Petersburg, VA 23803. We extend an invitation to every arts organization and individuals throughout the Southside Virginia Region who are interested in bringing the arts community together to organize efforts and maximize the strength of arts entities. We are proposing that every arts entity carry representation on the Board of Directors of the SVCA to assist us in developing a strategy and plans for moving the arts forward. This would allow for a better collaborative effort in searching for additional funding opportunities, resolving operational issues, and overall challenges that every organization faces. In addition, it would allow us to work as a collective force in marketing, maximizing community support, and the future of the entire arts community for generations. During this session, the SVCA would also like to solicit your ideas and support in the planning for the "Minds Wide Open" Women in the Arts Celebration that will be held throughout the state of Virginia in year 2010. We look forward to welcoming you at the forum. If you have any questions, please contact our board secretary, Leon Richardson (email: Gallery398 at aol.com ) or Howard Meyers at (804) 733-8200. She will speak on "Hard Truths on Poverty and Human Rights" Friday, Oct. 23 at NOON in Camp Concert Hall, Modlin Center for the Arts, University of Richmond. Her one-hour long talk is free and open to all. Tickets are not required. Please pass the word among your colleagues and friends who are interested in human rights and justice for all. About the Topic: Indignity, deprivation, suppression, insecurity, inequality: All are common experiences for many people. What does living in dignity mean to us? What responsibility do we have to advocate for the rule of law, the right to peaceful protest, and the need for a global, holistic, economic, social, and cultural solution to poverty and human rights abuses? Irene Khan, leader of Amnesty International, shares her view on the state of our world, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, from the streets of Iran to the oil fields of the Niger Delta. About the Speaker: Irene Zubaida Khan is the Secretary General of Amnesty International, the human rights organization. She is the first woman, the first Asian, the first Bangladeshi, and the first Muslim to hold the organization's highest leadership position. Khan grew up in a relatively wealthy family in what was then the eastern, Bengali-speaking wing of Pakistan (now Bangladesh), which was racked by poverty. Human rights abuses during the Bangladesh Liberation War, in which Bangladesh achieved independence, shaped Khan's activist viewpoint. She left Bangladesh as a teenager for school in Northern Ireland, and later studied at the University of Manchester and earned a law degree at Harvard University. She helped create several human rights organizations and then spent 20 years at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. She led important teams in India and Kosovo. In 2001, her first year as Amnesty's leader, she reformed Amnesty's response to crisis situations and initiated a global campaign against violence toward women. To remain viable and effective in meeting community needs, individual organizations, leaders, staff members, volunteers and patrons of those organizations collectively, must become the leaders of change in thought, perspective and action about the work of nonprofits. Opportunity and innovation are born out of adversity, so there is no better time for the nonprofit sector to champion a "new deal" with broader community. Building on the foundation laid at the Southside Community Partners' Community Forum on Collaboration for Long-term Sustainability, this workshop will: Frame the new issues and perspectives of the work of nonprofits; Promote proactive roles in developing solutions to sustainability; Design a baseline understanding about the dynamics of community and nonprofit alliances; and Explore the continuum of options and active strategies available for increasing impact and success. Patients should bring a list of their medications when they visit the bus. The "Help is Here Express" is staffed by trained specialists who will help patients access information and enroll in any of the hundreds of patient assistance programs that are a part of PPA. When the "Help is Here Express" moves on, patients can visit PPA's easy-to-use Web site (www.pparx.org ) or call the toll-free phone number (1-888-4PPA-NOW) where trained operators field calls in 150 languages. In addition, we still have a limited supply of free seasonal flu shots available, which we will be administering while the PPA bus is here. No appointment necessary, first come, first served. Sorry, this vaccine is approved for adults only. Frank Brown Administrative Assistant Pathways 1200 W.
