Topics that will be addressed are: * What are the facts surrounding underage drinking in your community? * How can we change the community norms to decrease acceptability? * Who can support enforcement of underage drinking laws? This Underage Drinking Prevention Town Hall Meeting is part of a national effort to increase understanding and awareness of underage drinking and its consequences, and to encourage individuals, families, and communities to address the problem. This local Town Hall Meeting will give community members the opportunity to come together to learn more about the new research on underage drinking and its impact on both individuals and the community, and to discuss how their community can implement the recommendations in The Surgeon General's Call to Action to prevent underage alcohol use. Since underage drinking is a critical health and safety issue, it is important to involve representatives from the entire community: parents, youth, education, faith-based, substance abuse prevention, other health entities, justice/law enforcement, highway safety, alcohol control, local government, and business. Many of them are located at the right height for children to see. Tobacco advertising has a strong effect on youth. The Rural Virginia United Coalition (RVUC) Tobacco Prevention Task Force has initiated a 'Store ALERT' (Advocates Limiting Exposure to Retail Tobacco) project, and an organizational meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 6:30 pm at the MP-NN CSB Prevention Services Office in Saluda. This project is designed to assist communities with action plans for reducing the influence of tobacco marketing. The tobacco industry spends over $11 billion each year marketing its products in the US (StoreALERT.org, 2009). With regulations on television, radio, billboard, sports stadium, bus and train advertising, the industry spends its advertising dollars in retail stores: convenience stores, groceries, gas stations, and many other types of shops. Retail tobacco advertising reaches all customers, making it easier for the tobacco companies to shift to "point of purchase" marketing. Committee members will coordinate the implementation of the 'Store Alert Report Card' to assess the level of retail tobacco advertising in their community. Strategies will be created to impact the public, lawmakers and the media. The 'RVUC Store ALERT Campaign' committee' meeting will be held at 872 General Puller Hwy, Saluda, in the 2nd floor conference room. If you are interested in volunteering to help reduce tobacco advertising that can influence our youth, please call 1-888-PREV-550 or email news at rvuc.com. Lynn Jaeger, C.P.P. From John.P.Trevillian at irs.gov Wed Apr 29 11:40:30 2009 From: John.P.Trevillian at irs.gov (Trevillian John P) Date: Wed, 29 Apr 2009 11:40:30 -0400 Subject: [connectRappahannock.org] Special Tax Break Available for New Car Purchases This Year Message-ID: <4D2D15203BDA2C4E8F7356EE47B3A9D40262783A@CHM0010CP3MB01.ds.irsnet.gov> The Internal Revenue Service has announced that taxpayers who buy a new passenger vehicle this year may be entitled to deduct state and local sales and excise taxes paid on the purchase on their 2009 tax returns next year. "For those thinking about buying a new car this year, this deduction may give them a little more drive to make their purchase this year," said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. "This deduction enables taxpayers to buy now and get cash back later on their tax returns." The deduction is limited to the state and local sales and excise taxes paid on up to $49,500 of the purchase price of a qualified new car, light truck, motor home or motorcycle. The amount of the deduction is phased out for taxpayers whose modified adjusted gross income is between $125,000 and $135,000 for individual filers and between $250,000 and $260,000 for joint filers. The vehicle must be purchased after Feb. 16, 2009, and before Jan. 1, 2010, to qualify for the deduction, which is available regardless of whether a taxpayer itemizes deductions on their return. Visit the IRS' website at www.irs.gov for more information on this and other tax topics. Also, don't forget to e-file your taxes - it's fast, easy, and more accurate than paper.
