Students at the University of Mary Washington will be able to take a course entitled ECON 324-Economics of Philanthropy and the Nonprofit Sector. The aspect of the course of most interest to you is the semester-long class project. Thanks to the generosity of Doris Buffett's Sunshine Lady Foundation, the class has been given $10,000 which it will use to make grants to local charitable organizations. My students will simulate the activities of a foundation (but the money is real). They will write a Request for Proposals and select recipients. The class starts on August 25. The RFP should be available on or about October 1. The application deadline will be on or about November 1. The grant (or grants) will be announced at a public ceremony on Tuesday, December 1. Additional details will be posted as they become known. This is the fifth year the course has been offered. Previous recipients of grants have included Hope House, the Fredericksburg Regional Boys and Girls Club, Rebuilding Together, Homes for America: Heritage Park Academic Achievement Program, National Housing Trust/Enterprise Preservation Corporation, Fredericksburg Counseling Services, and Fredericksburg Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Based on the names of the recipients, you can tell what has interested my students in the past. Whether this year's students will want to continue funding these types of organizations or something entirely different remains to be seen. New students bring new ideas. To maximize the educational value of the project, the project will be student-directed as much as possible. Neither Doris Buffett nor I will have much say in the selection of recipients. We anticipate this course to be an annual offering at UMW for quite some time in the future. Please feel free to circulate this message among your associates. I will be happy to answer your questions about the project. Please contact me by e-mail at rrycroft at umw.edu or by phone at 540-654-1500. How to we attain it? Most of us would agree that wellness involves good general health. The holistic approach to wellness would encompass the mind, body, and spirit. Many of us walk or go to the gym to keep out bodies fit. Our spirit can be nurtured in many ways. Reading, hobbies, or possibly even therapy, can foster a sense of wellness for the mind. But where can you go to nurture your mind, body, and spirit all at once? Virginia State Parks' Women's Wellness Weekends might be the answer! Virginia State Parks Director Joe Elton always says that our parks provide "a tonic for the mind, body, and spirit." There is something about the peacefulness of the setting, surrounded by nature and fresh air, that makes you feel less stressed as soon as you enter one of our parks. Combine the serenity of the place with the camaraderie of other women, fun activities, and learning experiences and you have a Women's Wellness Weekend. Our next Women's Wellness Weekend is coming up September 25 - 27, 2009, at Westmoreland State Park, Montross, VA, located in Virginia's beautiful Northern Neck. The weekend will offer wild variety of activities like fossil hunting, birding, and nature journaling, stress reduction through breathing, fly fishing, outdoor photography, aroma therapy, kayaking and yoga. Jack Fuller will be doing a program on "Tai Chi for Busy People", Melanie Bach from Northern Neck Home and Garden will be teaching participants how to make an aquatic garden. Angie Brack will be presenting a "Healthy Living Workshop". There is also going to be a session on empowering women; Do it Yourself Home Maintenance and hints on making your home "Green", and Go- Green Basic Auto Maintenance. With the current economic climate, life is more stressful than ever for many of us, Women's Wellness Weekends allow you to escape the pressures of modern life. With that in mind Virginia State Parks has tried to keep the program as affordable as possible. Both posting and searching are free, and there is a great deal of information on each apartment, including proximity to public transportation. The accessible apartment search engine on www.AccessVA.org now links to VirginiaHousingSearch.com, but please continue to visit that site, sponsored by VHDA and the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities (www.VABoard.org), to access a wide range of additional accessible housing resources. The Housing and Transportation Resource Bank on Virginia's Money Follows the Person (MFP) Project website has also recently been updated.
