Please join us at the RVUC Alcohol Prevention Task Force meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 14, 2009 beginning at 6:30 PM at the West Point Public Library, 721 Main Street, West Point (804-843-3244). You can register electronically at www.rvuc.com or call/email Clarence M. Burrell, Jr. 804-843-4643, bigpapa1953 at hotmail.com . Topics that will be addressed are: * What are the facts surrounding underage drinking in your community? * How can we change the community norms to decrease acceptability? * Who can support enforcement of underage drinking laws? Preventing the use of alcohol by minors in the Middle Peninsula-Northern Neck region is an important goal for the Rural Virginia United Coalition (RVUC). Children receive mixed messages about drinking from peers, adults, movies, television, magazines and possibly by parents. They don't fully grasp the dangers of alcohol use. Social norms are standards of behavior that are taught consciously or unconsciously which can have a strong affect on young people who are testing boundaries and striving to fit in. The community needs to be aware of law enforcement strategies and support officials in their efforts to implement enforcement. Since underage drinking is a critical health and safety issue, it is important to involve representatives from the entire community: parents, youth, education, faith-based, substance abuse prevention, other health entities, justice/law enforcement, highway safety, alcohol control, local government, and business. Please join us!
