Subject: [connectRappahannock.org] Volunteers Needed for Northern Neck
Waterways Cleanups
Message-ID: <20090902125116.q0mt21pgussk0oc0@mail.connectnetwork.org>
Spend a few hours at the water ... make a world of difference in your
community .... In keeping with the past, Northern Neck Soil & Water
Conservation District is coordinating fall waterways cleanup events on
three different dates as part of the annual Virginia Waterways Cleanup
organized by Clean Virginia Waterways (CVW) of Longwood University.
Volunteers are still needed.
The first of the cleanups are two Lancaster County sites, scheduled
for Saturday, September 12. Please register to help with these morning
events, which follow the busy Labor Day weekend. This is a great way
for you and your family and friends to be part of the stewardship of
the Northern Neck's natural surroundings-to be part of the solution to
an aesthetic and environmental problem in the community-trash in our
rivers and on our shores.
Lancaster (two sites, concurrently): Saturday, September 12, 9:00 a.m.-noon
Greenvale Creek Public Landing, Mollusk
Windmill Point Beach, White Stone
In 2008, a record number of citizens came forward in Virginia. With
5,710 volunteers picking up 254,046 pounds of trash on 365 miles of
Virginia's rivers, streams and beaches, the effort set an all time
record for the state.
Later cleanups are set for two other counties:
Northumberland: Saturday, September 26, 9:00a.m.- noon Lodge
Landing, near Callao
Richmond (two sites): Sunday, October 18, 2:00-5:00 p.m. Jones
Creek Landing followed by Carter's Wharf Public Landing
The data collected from the cleanups are used by the Ocean
Conservancy, Virginia State Parks, U.S. Coast Guard, National Park
Service and hundreds of nonprofit organizations to help track trends
in litter, and to design litter-prevention efforts.
This annual event is part of the International Coastal Cleanup, the
world's largest volunteer effort to collect data on litter and trash
in the aquatic environment! Cleanup events are held on the coasts, and
inland, since inland litter often ends up in our Bay and our oceans.
Of the top ten categories of the trash picked up from Virginia's
rivers and beaches, cigarette butts are on top of the list. Food and
beverage packaging dominate the rest of the list. Last year's
volunteer efforts at Farnham Creek Landing in Richmond County and
Westmoreland State Park yielded a similar top ten list as the state's,
in general, with cigarettes and filters leading the way, accumulating
to 1,700 at the two sites. The total haul of trash for the two sites
weighed in at 556 pounds.
Interested volunteers or groups please register with Faye Andrashko,
Northern Neck Soil & Water Conservation District, 804 333-3525, ext
113, or faye.andrashko at va.nacdnet.net. NNSWCD will provide directions
to sites, as well as snacks, water, and sunscreen at the event.
Registration is necessary to assure sufficient supplies and for
contacting participants in case of weather-related changes. Please
bring protective gloves and hats and wear shoes that can get wet.

Message-ID: <009f01ca2bf9$9d0c23b0$0200a8c0@Kim>
The Bay School, a community arts center located on Main Street in Mathews,
will show "From Monet to Van Gogh: a History of Impressionism" DVD lecture
series on Fridays from September 18 - November 13 at 7pm. These lectures
are taught by Professor Richard Brettell of the Aesthetic Studies at The
University of Texas at Dallas. He is a teacher and curator of international
renown and is widely published on 19th-20th century art. In this lecture
series, you will learn how the Impressionist aesthetic was driven by the
rise of the railroad and suburban tourism; how Mary Cassatt painted the
lives of wealthy expatriates, while Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec scoured the
dives of Montmartre to draw Paris by night; about technique: Degas's use of
lighting effects, Renoir's plump, sensuous brushstrokes. "We'll take a
chronological, and oftentimes biographical, approach to studying the artists
rather than looking at each career separately," says Professor Brettell.
"This is due in large part to the fact that there was a certain amount of
collectivity among them, visible not only in the Impressionist exhibitions
but in the artistic tours/retreats that pairs of painters took in order to
study modern life and its environs." This information was taken from the
www.greatcourses.com website.
Theses DVD lectures are free to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Message-ID:
In a national survey of businesses that looks at their preparations for
a possible widespread H1N1 outbreak, researchers found that only 1/3
believe they could sustain their business without severe operational
problems if half their workforce were absent for two weeks due to H1N1.
Just 1/5 believe they could avoid such problems for one month with half
their employees out. The survey also found that while 74% of businesses
offer paid sick leave for employees, only 35% of businesses offer paid
leave that would allow employees to take care of sick family members,
and even fewer would allow paid time off to care for children if
schools/daycares were closed (21%).
Does your business/organization/agency have a plan on how to adjust your
operations to account for greater absenteeism? Do you have a plan on how
to slow the spread of H1N1 in the workplace?

Subject: [connectRappahannock.org] Take the V3 Campaign Survey: Increasing
Policy Makers' Awareness of the Nonprofit Sector
Message-ID: <04DEED328F334EF795ED1C6F70ECDFCE@uc.adp.vcu.edu>
Dear ConnectNetwork community:
This important message has been released on behalf of the V3 Campaign. We
encourage you to take a few minutes to answer this survey.
--------------------------------------------------------
The V3 Campaign is seeking answers from you!
Too many in the public and media as well as our policy makers are unaware of
the economic and social impact of the nonprofit sector. When it comes to
addressing the problems of poverty, education, public health and
environmental quality, the nonprofit sector is leading the way in producing
solutions. These solutions, however, could have an even greater impact if
they were leveraged through more powerful and enterprising partnerships
between nonprofit, business and governmental forces.
The V3 Campaign has these issues in mind as it
becomes part permanent campaign and part nonprofit organization. This
hybrid will become both resource center and advocacy arm for nonprofit
organizations nationally, with an eye towards a global initiative.
The V3 Campaign has partnered with ConnectNetwork, American Humanics, and
Virginia Network of Nonprofit Organizations to launch this survey.
This survey runs from September 10 - September 30, 2009, with findings
presented in October.
Please follow this link
to take this 15 minute survey.
The survey answers will help the V3 Campaign determine how nonprofit
employees and leaders would like to see this exciting campaign develop and
will produce information that we can present to those who run for office so
that they will better understand the vast untapped power of the nonprofit
community.
Thank you so much for your time!

Reminder and New Site Added - Northern Neck Waterways Cleanups
Each fall, Northern Neck Soil & Water Conservation District coordinates local waterways cleanup events as part of the Virginia Waterways Cleanup organized by Clean Virginia Waterways (CVW) of Longwood University. These Virginia cleanups are part of a larger international event sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy.
Volunteers are still needed for the Northern Neck, and a new site has been added. Please register to spend a few hours of your time to help remove debris from our shorelines, trash that might ultimately affect people, as well as fish, birds, and other animals that directly or indirectly encounter it.
On September 12 volunteers gathered at two Lancaster County sites recovered some 390 pounds of debris from shoreline areas at Windmill Point and Greenvale Creek Landing. A total report will be tallied for these and future cleanups that are scheduled for Northumberland, Westmoreland and Richmond counties:
Northumberland: Saturday, September 26, 9:00a.m.-noon-Lodge Landing, near Callao.
Westmoreland: Saturday, October 10, 3:00 - 6:00 p.m., Westmoreland State Park; meet at Visitor's Center.
Richmond (two sites): Sunday, October 18, 2:00-5:00 p.m.-Jones Creek Landing followed by Carter's Wharf Public Landing.
This is a great way for organizations, families, and friends to be part of the stewardship of the Northern Neck-to be part of the solution to an aesthetic and environmental problem in the community: trash in our rivers and on our shores.
Interested volunteers or groups please register with Faye Andrashko, Northern Neck Soil & Water Conservation District, 804 333-3525, ext 113, or faye.andrashko at va.nacdnet.net . NNSWCD will provide directions to sites, as well as snacks, water, and sunscreen at the event. Registration is necessary to assure sufficient supplies and for contacting participants in case of weather-related changes. Please bring protective gloves and hats, and wear shoes that can get wet.

To Local Area Charitable Organizations:
Attached is a Request for Proposal from the University of Mary Washington Economics of Philanthropy and the Nonprofit Sector class. The RFP is in both Word and PDF formats. The RFP announces the availability of $10,000 in grant funding. The submission deadline is October 21, 2009. (We can only accept hardcopy submissions.) The grant (or grants) will be announced at a public ceremony on Tuesday, December 1.
Twenty-one students at the University of Mary Washington are taking a course entitled ECON 324-Economics of Philanthropy and the Nonprofit Sector. I am the instructor. The aspect of the course of most interest to you is the semester-long class project. Thanks to the generosity of Doris Buffett's Sunshine Lady Foundation, the class has been given $10,000 to use to make grants to local charitable organizations. To maximize the educational value of the project, the project will be student-directed as much as possible. Neither Doris Buffett nor I will have any say in the selection of recipients.
The RFP has been written in such a way as to attract submissions from a wide variety of charitable organizations.
This is the fifth year the course has been offered, and we anticipate this course to be an annual offering at UMW for quite some time in the future.
Please feel free to circulate this message among your associates.
I will be happy to answer your questions about the RFP. Please contact me by e-mail at rrycroft at umw.edu or by phone at 540-654-1500.
Yours truly,
Robert S Rycroft
Professor of Economics

Annual Rappahannock River Run and Crafts Festival Gears up for its Eleventh Year
Tappahannock, VA -- St. Margaret's School is inviting one and all to the Eleventh Annual Crafts Festival and River Run/Walk set for October 16-17, 2009 on the school campus. The event is a community outreach project of the St. Margaret's School Alumnae Association, which will use proceeds from the crafts festival and run/walk to support projects that benefit St. Margaret's School.
"We look forward to welcoming families, crafters, shoppers and runners to our beautiful campus for a weekend of shopping and a fun, family-oriented 5k run/walk," said Alumnae Association President Jenni Booker of Richmond and White Stone.
Shoppers can pick up interesting and unique items at the crafts festival that will be held on Friday, October 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in front of Brockenbrough House on Water Lane. Vendors will feature a wide variety of gifts, home d?cor and accessories, clothing, jewelry, and other items. In case of inclement weather, the fair will be held in the Ball Memorial Gymnasium on the school's campus.
Runners and walkers can register online for the 3-mile Rappahannock River Run/Walk - which will take place at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 17 - at www.sms.org/run. Participants who register prior to race day will receive an early-bird rate of $15 and are guaranteed a race T-shirt.
Race-day registration will be held from 7:00 to 7:45 a.m. in front of St. Margaret's Hall and costs $20. The flat, fast course begins and ends at St. Margaret's School and takes participants through Tappahannock's historic district. Prizes are awarded each year in a variety of categories, in addition to special recognition in three age categories for the top male runner and top female runner.
Many area merchants and organizations are helping to sponsor the run/walk. To date, event sponsors include: www.2preppygirls.com, Aylett Country Day School, Bridget's Bouquets Inc., Derwin Booker-Realtor-Long and Foster Real Estate, Design Printing, Digital Wisdom, Esquire Services Inc., Essex Bank, The Essex Inn, EVB, Northern Neck Building Supply, Panoply Computer Services, Petals-Flowers by Sarah, Rivahside Caf?, Riverland Insurers, Store-Tel Storage, and WRAR 105.5. For more information about the crafts fair or race contact Mavora Donoghue at (804) 443-3357 or email mdonoghu at sms.org .
The St. Margaret's School's motto, "As we grow in age, may we grow in grace," reflects the school's commitment to the growth of young women in every area of their lives; growth in intellectual ability, growth in physical well being, growth in social responsibility, growth in spiritual maturity. St. Margaret's offers a diverse student body and a sound college preparatory curriculum, challenging to each individual. In a Christian environment, founded on the Episcopal tradition, both honor and character are developed. St. Margaret's seeks to inspire each student to make the best of herself, and in so doing, make a better world.
