Norris, M.D., one of Lancaster?s first black physicians. The program, co-sponsored by the Mary Ball Washington Museum and the Lancaster Community Library, will be held at 4:00 p.m. at the public library, 235 School Street, in Kilmarnock. The event is free but donations are appreciated. A book signing will follow the presentation; books are available at the event or in advance at the MBW Museum Gift Shop for $15.75 tax included. Reservations are requested to 462-7280 or history at mbwm.org to ensure enough seating and book copies. Morgan Norris's life spanned the contentious period from post-Reconstruction to the relentless erosion of civil liberties for blacks, the encoding of segregation into law, and finally the collapse of Jim Crow. When Norris returned to his native home in Lancaster in 1917 and began his practice, he was the only black doctor in a county with eleven white doctors. When he died in 1966, the American Medical Association had yet to disavow local and state societies that discriminated against black physicians. Fight On, My Soul is a meticulously researched biography and a moving story that captures the struggles of Norris? life and times and his efforts to provide better conditions for his family and beloved patients. And only about 1 in 5 of those children actually get the treatment they need? We believe that Virginia can and must do better for its children. For that reason, Voices for Virginia's Children, along with more than 20 partners, has launched the Campaign for Children 's Mental Health. The goal of the Campaign is to make mental health services available and accessible to the children who need them, regardless of where in Virginia they live or what "system" identifies their needs. We will accomplish this by building grassroots support to convince policy makers that this issue matters to Virginians. For that reason, the Campaign for Children's Mental Health needs as many people as possible on its email list to have the greatest political influence possible! The Campaign will use the list to send out information and advocacy requests during the legislative session and throughout the Campaign. The Campaign is asking: 1) For all those who are concerned with children's mental health to click here to sign up to receive Campaign-specific emails. You will see that your home address is requested so that you will be sorted into legislative district to have the biggest impact. The Campaign will not be sending anything through the mail- it is only an electronic network. We want to have thousands of concerned Virginians in our advocacy network. 2) Please forward this email to your members, friends, colleagues, and any others who might be interested asking them to sign up as well. 3) Take a moment to visit the www.1in5kids.org website. Tell your story, get the facts, and learn more about the campaign. Please, get yourself and others signed up!!! Feel free to contact Margaret Nimmo Crowe, Campaign coordinator, for more information. Youth ages 3-15 are invited to attend the program. The season will open with a Spring Clinic on March 6th and will have games beginning March 13th through April 25th. By ending one week earlier then we do in Fall Soccer, our intention is to ensure youth can play both Soccer and Little League baseball. The cost of the program is $30 for members and $50 for program participants. All youth will receive jersey, shorts, and socks with their registration. Teams will be selected no later then March 5, 2010 prior to soccer clinic at the Middlesex Sports Complex. As with all programs at the Middlesex we have a Guardian Scholarship Fund to ensure all youth have the opportunity to participate in our programs. Last year, we were able to offer over $80,000 in scholarships for childcare, programs, and memberships for individuals to take part in the offerings of the YMCA. During soccer, all youth will have a minimum of one practice a week with games on Saturday mornings at the Middlesex Sports Complex(with the exception of the 3-5 Division who both practice and have games on Tuesdays from 5:30PM-6:30PM). If you are interested in the youth soccer please come by the YMCA or send us the attached form at P.O. Box 524 Hartfield, VA 23071. Please make checks payable to the YMCA. For further information about the youth soccer league please call (804)776-8846 or email me directly. YOUTH SOCCER FAQ 1. Children do NOT have to be an active member of 4-H clubs to attend-it is open to all interested youth. Camp gives local youth an opportunity to spend a week swimming, learning, and engaging in character building activities. There is also an opportunity for older youth (14-18) to hone their leadership skills as Teen Leaders. We are afraid that fewer families will sign up for camp this year due to the economy. Families are feeling the pinch, as well as organizations such as 4-H, where operational expenses have driven camp registration costs higher than ever--$225.00 per camper. We are asking our partners in the community to consider the benefits of the 4-H camping experience for our youth. Each year, we offer full and partial scholarships that allow youth who would otherwise be unable, to attend camp. We anticipate a greater need than ever for scholarship funds to assist families who wish to send their children to camp (which for many area children is the only trip they will take all summer). If you would like to make a difference in a child's summer and help with camp expenses, we are welcoming donations of any amount to our scholarship funds. For more information on the scholarship program and how you can donate, please contact me, Annette Jewell in LANCASTER County (see contact info below), or Kathleen Watson at the NORTHUMBERLAND County Extension office, 580-5694 or kdwatson at vt.edu Thank you!
