Improving Eldercare Through Education
Senior Connections is sponsoring a volunteer with the AmeriCorps VISTA
(Volunteer in Service to America). We have been approved as a sponsor
and are recruiting for this position now.  
There will be formal training for both the volunteer and the supervisor
in January. The National Council on Aging is our partner and will
coordinate the arrangements for training and provide oversight for the
placement. All travel arrangements and expenses will be the
responsibility of the program.

The VISTA volunteer will work out of the Agency building at 24 E. Cary
Street Richmond VA. The Vista will be involved in capacity building and
volunteer recruitment to facilitate awareness of the Low Income Subsidy
for Medicare Part D. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
(CMS) estimates there are over 10,000 eligible seniors and others with
Medicare who have not yet applied for the extra help in our metro area
and the surrounding counties.

The volunteer will receive a stipend, health insurance and mileage and
other benefits. Plus the VISTA will develop lasting community
organization, program development and public speaking skills. For a
student who wants some work experience or person over fifty who wants a
community action position or perhaps wants to re-enter the work world
eventually, this will be a great opportunity to sample a field and
develop expertise. The volunteer will work closely with the insurance
counseling program, CMS and other partners.

The VISTA must be 18 or older, but there is no maximum age. Retirees and
seniors of all ages are welcomed.

It will be a full time position and will require one year commitment.
The volunteer may not have another job or school obligations during the
period of service.
