February is National Heart Month

Senior Connections Encourages Older Adults to Improve and Maintain Their Health
National Heart Month is observed every February. This is a time to promote healthy lifestyle choices that can help prevent cardiovascular diseases, especially for older adults age 60 and over. While older adults are at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease they can dramatically reduce their risks by making healthier lifestyle choices according to the National Institute on Aging.

Preventing cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, heart failure and peripheral arterial disease is often just a matter of lifestyle choices. Regular exercise, healthy diet, healthy weight, not smoking, keeping blood pressure and cholesterol at normal levels, and controlling diabetes are ways to prevent cardiovascular diseases. Even though older adults have no control over their age or family history, there are steps they can take to alleviate the risks for heart disease.

In accordance with our vision statement, Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging encourages and supports seniors in improving and maintaining quality of life. The Agency offers several programs that promote health and wellness. These include Friendship Cafés where seniors receive nutritious noontime meals, socialization, exercises, health education and screenings. Transportation is provided to the Friendship Cafés. Senior Connections sponsors 17 cafés in the metro Richmond area. The Senior Center, A Community Partnership, sponsored by Senior Connections and other community partners, also offer opportunities for wellness and fitness activities. The Senior Center is located at 2710 Monument Avenue in Richmond's historic Fan District.
